WashU Offense Explodes for Win Over No. 10 Adrian; Bears Finish Record-Breaking Season in World Series Semifinals

The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team clinched a 16-5 win over No. 10 Adrian in the elimination game on Sunday.

WashU improves to 34-5 as Adrian ends its season at 37-10. With this win, the team ties the the record for most wins in a single season.

The Bears started off strong, with junior Tim Van Kirk and first-year Magnus Dunn hitting singles, and Van Kirk stealing second and advancing to third on Dunn's hit. Junior Caleb Durbin hit the RBI single to put the first run on the board.

Adrian got its first runner on with an error in the infield, and two singles pushed the runner across the plate to tie it up 1-1 in the first inning.

Junior Zac Styka earned a walk to begin the second inning and made it to second when first-year Kaden Bernhard laid down a shallow bunt. Senior Collin Kahal singled to right center to load up the bases with 0 outs. 

Van Kirk singled to left, pushing two runs across the plate to take back the lead at 3-1. Van Kirk stole second for the second time of the day to put runners on second and third. Dunn's fielder choice RBI advanced Kahal home and first-year Clayton Miller singled down the left field line for the bears' fifth run of the game.

The Bulldogs hit a double and took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to grab the second run. The team found another double with the runner advancing to third on a wild pitch. A single pushed the runner home to make it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the third.

Dunn and Durbin hit singles to get on base, and Dunn scored off of Miller's single through left. Junior Bo Anderson's bunt advanced Miller to second and pushed the second run of the inning across the plate. Junior Andrew Huang entered the game as the designated hitter, earning a walk to load up the bases with 0 outs.

Styka hit an RBI single and Bernhard was hit by a pitch to keep the bases loaded. Kahal earned an RBI walk and Van Kirk hit the sacrifice fly to send Styka home. Dunn's second single of the inning scored the sixth run, ending the top of the fourth with an 11-3 lead.

Adrian got its bats swinging in the fourth, with four singles in a row scoring two runs. Senior Mitchell Black struck out the final batter of the inning with the bases loaded to end the inning at 11-5.

The fifth through eighth were the first scoreless innings for both teams. Adrian had a runner on third in the sixth, but Black struck out the final batter to end the inning. Junior Matt Lopes entered the game with the bases loaded in the seventh, and the batter hit the third pitch he saw into a double play. 

The Bears were not done yet, scoring five runs in the top of the ninth starting with singles from Bernhard and Van Kirk and a walk for Dunn to load up the bases. Durbin and Miller each earned an RBI to tack on an additional two runs. Anderson wrapped up the inning, sending a homerun deep into left for the 16-5 lead that would become the final score.

ST. THOMAS 6, WASHU 4

The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team concluded its season in game 10 of the World Series with a 6-4 loss to St. Thomas.

The Tommies improve to 37-8 as WashU finishes with a 34-6 record. 

The game went scoreless through two innings, with first-year Clayton Miller making his first start from the mound this season.

The Tommies got on base in the third with an error from the infield. The runner stole second and scored the first run of the game from an RBI single. An additional single and error loaded up the bases, but the final batter flied out to junior Caleb Durbin for the final out of the inning.

Senior Collin Kahal singled through right and advanced after first-year Magnus Dunn was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. Junior Caleb Durbin singled twice in the game, but was unable to put a ball down to advance any runners. 

Senior Tim Tague entered in the sixth. The first batter grounded out to junior Tim Van Kirk and the second fouled out to the catcher, sophomore Hunter Goldberg. The next batter hit a deep double to left field with the following doubling to right center for the 2-0 lead.

Junior Bo Anderson hit his second homerun of the Series to put WashU on the board in the bottom of the inning. Bernhard singled and a balk advanced him to second base. Goldberg hit the clutch RBI single to right field to tie it up at 2-2.

The Tommies took back its lead at 3-2 with a runner on second and two outs. Junior Austin Sachen entered the game and struck out the final batter to end the top of the seventh.

Van Kirk and Dunn singled and advanced to second and third from Durbin's sacrifice bunt. Miller's single to right center sent those two runs home for the 4-3 lead.

Sachen struck out three in a row on 11 pitches to maintain WashU's lead in the top of the eighth.

Sophomore Kyle Coates stepped up to the mound in the ninth. The runner at first made it to third off of an error, and tied up the game from a sacrifice bunt. A walk put runners on first and second, with a single sending a runner home for a 5-4 advantage. Another singled followed to tack on an extra run.

Senior Dominick DiCosimo entered the inning with two outs and runners on first and second. The batter grounded out to third base for the third out of the inning.
