From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis Judges opened up their four game series against the visiting Washington University Bears with an 11-6 win. Graduate student Mike Khoury (E. Bridgewater, Mass. / E. Bridgewater) homered twice in the game, the first tying and the second breaking the Brandeis career home run record with 28 in his career. The win improves the Judges' record to 14-7 (4-5 in the UAA), while the loss takes the Bears' record to 9-16 (1-8 in the UAA).

The Bears got off to a hot start with third baseman Andrew Huang homering to left field, scoring right fielder Magnus Dunn and earning himself two RBIs. Three batters later, left fielder Jack Miller singled to left field, scoring pitcher Clayton Miller. This was one of Miller's three hits on the day. 

Graduate student and starting pitcher Mason Newman (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) 1-2-3'd the Bears in the second inning to set up the Judges in the bottom of the second. After the first two Judges batters reached base, sophomore second baseman Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) singled to score junior right fielder Steven Simon (Hanover, Mass. / Hanover) from third. The scoring continued for the Judges two batters later with an RBI single from junior left fielder Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield). In the very next at bat, Khoury launched his first home run of the day, scoring DiCenso, Nugent, and himself.

After a scoreless third inning, the Bears tied the game back up with a two-run home run from shortstop Harry Mauterer. Newman struck out the next three Bears batters. Khoury led off the bottom of the fourth with his second and record-breaking home run. With the second bomb of the day, he surpassed Jim Deschaine '99's career mark of 27 homers which had stood for 23 years. It was Khoury's UAA-leading 10th homer of the season, making him just the fourth Judge in school history to reach double-digit dingers in a campaign. Khoury finished the game with five RBI for the second game in a row and passed Deschaine for fourth place on Brandeis's career list with 116. 

The scoring did not stop there for the Judges. Junior shortstop Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif. / Palos Verde) singled to score graduate catcher Luke Hall (Georgetown, Mass. / Georgetown). The Judges added to their lead in the fifth with another RBI from Khoury, an error by the Bears, and a two-run home run from graduate center fielder Dan Frey (Ipswich, Mass. / St. John's Prep), his fifth of the year. The final run of the game came from an RBI single by Bear first baseman Zac Styka in the top of the ninth.

For the Judges, Newman improved his record to 3-2 on the season in his complete-game effort, giving up 10 hits and six runs (five earned) with seven strikeouts and zero walks. The Bears' starter Clayton Miller fell to 1-3 on the year giving up 10 hits, eight runs (seven earned), two walks, and six strikeouts in his four innings. Then Hank Weiss came in to finish the game, giving up four hits, three earned runs, two strikeouts, and one walk.
