Offensive Onslaught Powers Emory Past NYU in Saturday Sweep

From Emory University Athletics

A huge offensive display Saturday afternoon powered the Emory University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over New York University at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Eagles combined to score 33 runs across the two games to defeat the Violets by scores of 9-2 and 24-8. With the sweep, Emory now sits 16-12 (3-4 UAA) on the season with NYU dipping to 14-3 (4-3 UAA).

Senior Robby Wacker and sophomore Tyler McLoughlin shouldered the load as the duo combined to drive in 15 of the runs. Wacker went 5-for-10 with a double, home run and eight RBI in the two games whereas McLoughlin finished 6-for-9 with seven RBI and smashed three home runs on the day.

Emory and NYU are scheduled to conclude the weekend's four-game series Sunday afternoon with the finale to begin at 11:00 AM on Coney Island.

Game 1 – Emory 9, NYU 2

The Eagles drew even in the series with a seven-run victory in the first game of the afternoon.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning, McLoughlin came up big with his first four-bagger of the day, walloping a two-run home run to give Emory the two-run cushion.

That was all the support the Eagles would need as the pitching staff held the Violets off the scoreboard for the final eight innings after seeing the home team plate two in the opening inning.

Senior Joey Bock twirled a season-best seven innings as he moved to 3-1. Bock gave up two runs on four hits while striking out six batters. Sophomore Derek Livingston earned the first save of his career as he tossed two scoreless frames, striking out three and working around two walks.

Wacker and McLoughlin each put forth three-RBI games with Steven Hunt chipping in with two doubles and one RBI.

Game 2 – Emory 24, NYU 8 (7 innings)

The Eagles finished two runs shy of the program's single-game record for runs scored as they picked up the mercy rule win. The 24 runs are the third most in a single game in team history and are the most tallied by an Eagles team since a 26-run outburst in 1998.

Ten different players collected a RBI with Wacker and McLoughlin leading the way with a combined nine runs driven in. Wacker brought home five runs in a 2-for-4 effort with McLoughlin going 4-for-4 with four RBI including a pair of home runs.

Remarkably, the Eagles did almost all of their damage in the game's final two innings as they pushed 22 runners home.

Trailing 5-2 entering the sixth, the Emory offense exploded for 14 runs with the help of three long balls. Following RBIs from Zeke Diamond, Wacker and Hunt, freshman Jack Halloran blasted the first round tripper of the inning to give the Eagles the 7-5 lead with his two-run shot. With the score 11-5, Wacker then delivered a three-run dinger before McLoughlin followed suit three batters later to put the Eagles in front by 11.

The Violets answered with three in the home half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 16-8 but Emory left no doubt in the seventh, plating eight more runs against the NYU bullpen.

Halloran ended the contest with three RBI in a 3-for-4 effort and scored a team-best four runs. Diamond, Henry Pelinski and Jack Masonis added multi-RBI performances in the blowout win.

On the mound, Jack Brodsky was able to improve to 2-3 with the ample amount of run support. He worked five innings, striking out six, and gave up seven runs (6 ER) on nine hits.
