University of Chicago's Luke Cutkomp was honored by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on Tuesday with the 2019 Division III Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Since its inception in 1997, the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year recognizes assistant coaches who excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success and AFCA professional organization involvement. 

Cutkomp is in his sixth season as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach for the Maroons, who posted a 6-3 record on the season. The defense ranked 38th nationally with 16.6 points allowed per game.

Cutkomp has been the main coordinator for the football team's involvement in Go4theGoal, Lace Up for Pediatric Cancer Awareness initiative as well as the Coach for Cure MD program. He also helps coordinate UChicago's on-campus ambassador's program for Team Impact, which puts chronically ill children into university sports programs for a positive life experience. Cutkomp helps supervise student-athletes involved with Project Rousseau (mentoring program at Kenwood Academy) as well as an after-school weekly physical education class for students at Ray Elementary School. He has coordinated events associated with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics, Oklahoma Cleats for Kids Foundation, tutoring at Educare Chicago and Polar Plunge.

Two of Cutkomp's past players have been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has coached two All-Americans, three All-Region selections, one conference defensive player of the year and 37 all-conference picks on the defensive side of the ball during his tenure at UChicago.
