UChicago Cancels Basketball and Wrestling for 2020-21 Winter Season

UChicago Cancels Basketball and Wrestling for 2020-21 Winter Season

From University of Chicago Athletics

Today the UAA announced that all formal UAA winter sports competitions have been canceled for the 2020-2021 season. Given the many challenges associated with holding competitions—including the implementation of NCAA testing protocols; travel limitations; local and state quarantine guidelines; and gathering restrictions—it became apparent that holding on to a mandated UAA schedule was not workable. Although we will be moving away from a conference-adopted schedule, UChicago remains a dedicated member of UAA and supports this decision to ensure the safety of our athletes and coaching staff.

We have also made the difficult decision to cancel non-conference basketball and wrestling competitions, given the close physical contact these sports require. We will follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Illinois and Chicago public health agencies, the NCAA's Sports Science Institute, and specialists from UChicago Medicine to determine if limited non-conference competitions in swimming & diving and indoor track & field are possible.

Despite this development, we are planning to provide substantive opportunities this winter for athletes to work with coaches and teammates through in-person practice and strength and conditioning programs.

We will be providing additional updates on the winter season in the weeks ahead. We have not yet made decisions about spring sports competitions; as the situation for spring evolves, we will communicate decisions as soon as possible.
