Washington University Celebrates Senior Day with Win Over Carnegie Mellon

The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day by hitting a season-high 15 three-pointers in a convincing 99-68 win over Carnegie Mellon University Sunday in St. Louis.

Prior to the game WashU honored its five seniors: Jonathan Arenas, Hank Hunter, Matt Nester, Louis Reinmiller and DeVaughn Rucker). The Class of 2020 has helped guide the Bears to a 78-22 (.780) overall record with two NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2017 and 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.

WashU improved to 18-4 and 9-2 in the UAA, while Carnegie Mellon fell to 10-12 and 3-8 in the league. WashU and No. 9 Emory sit in a tie for first place in the UAA standings with three games remaining.

Sophomore Justin Hardy and Rucker led the Bears with 17 points each, while junior Jack Nolan had 15 points, a season-high six rebounds and a season-best four steals. Sophomore Kameron Mack (12) and junior Payden Webb (11) also scored in double figures for WashU, who shot 55.7 percent (39-70) from the field. 

WashU opened the game by scoring the first eight points as CMU was 0-for-1 with five turnovers on its first six possessions. Back-to-back threes by Nester and Mack made it 29-23, and then a pair of threes by Hardy highlighted a 10-2 run by WashU to make it 39-30. 

Mack's three at the buzzer gave WashU the 45-32 lead as the Bears limited CMU to 1-of-8 shooting to end the first half. Hardy and Mack led WashU with 10 points each as the Bears shot 54.3 percent (19-35) from the field and had a 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

WashU opened the second half on an 11-2 run, and then back-to-back threes by Webb highlighted a 10-0- run as the Bears extended the lead to 65-40. 

Zach Howarth (14 points) and Colin McNeil (12 points, six assists) scored in double figures for Carnegie Mellon, who shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field and committed 15 turnovers.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Carnegie Mellon 56-9, and the Bears have won 10-straight meetings … The Senior Class played its 100th game … Reinmiller had a career-high six points on a pair of threes in the second start of his career … The Bears are 11-1 at home this season, and 21-4 in two seasons under head coach Pat Juckem… Nolan canned his 200th three-pointer, just the fourth player in school history to achieve the feat … The 15 threes made were two shy of the WashU single-game record, while the 99 points were a season high.
