Brandeis Tops Johns Hopkins at Duke Invitational

Facing one of their toughest fields of the season, the Brandeis men's fencing team posted a 1-4 record at the 2020 Duke University Invitational. In addition to a session-ending win over former UAA foe Johns Hopkins, 18-9, the Judges nearly knocked off #4-ranked Penn State, losing by one point, 14-13, with all three weapons decided by 5-4 margins. The Judges also were edged by North Carolina, 15-12, as all three weapons were 6-3 decisions. Brandeis won the epee competition in both of those matches. The Judges also lost to #10 Duke, 17-10, and #5 Notre Dame, 20-7. Brandeis is now 16-16 on the season.

TOP INDIVIDUALS

  • The top individual mark of the tournament for the men went to rookie epeeist Ben Rogak (E. Setauket, N.Y. / Ward-Melville), who led his squad to a 3-2 record by going 11-4 overall. He posted 3-0 records against Penn State and North Carolina and was 2-1 against Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins. Rogak's only losing record came against Duke, when he went 1-2.
  • Two other fencers picked up wins against all five opponents today.
  • The sabre squad was paced by sophomore Lucas Lin (Plano, Texas/Plano East), who went 8-7 with 2-1 records against Notre Dame, UNC and JHU.
  • Senior Ian Quin (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) went 8-6, posting 2-1 marks against PSU, UNC and Duke, 1-2 vs Notre Dame and 1-1 against Hopkins.
  • There were three other undefeated matches for the Judges: senior foil fencer Sam Chestna (Middleborough, Mass.) was 3-0 against Johns Hopkins, as was senior epee fencer Chris Armstrong (Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park). Rookie Josh Shuster (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Staten Island Technical) was 3-0 against Duke.
