NYU Takes Four of Six Matches at Final Day of Penn Invitational

The New York University men's fencing team won four out of six matches on the second and final day of competition at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational on Sunday, January 19, in Philadelphia, PA.

The Violets defeated Ohio State University (17-10), Brandeis University (20-7), Wayne State University (18-9), and Yale University (17-10). Their only losses came to the University of Notre Dame (18-9) and St. John's University (19-8).

Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) had the teams' best performance of the day going 12-6 in epee. He went a perfect 3-0 against Ohio State. Liam Carpenter (Bedford, MA/St. John's Prep) also recorded nine wins with the weapon.

The sabre team excelled with three players winning 10 bouts each. Brian Kim (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Dwight-Englewood), captain Grant Williams (Atlanta, GA/The Galloway School) and Darren Yen (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) had records of 10-4, 10-4 and 10-5 respectively. 

Owen McKenna (New Hope, PA /Germantown Academy) was the lone 10 bout winner in foil with an overall record of 10-8. He went 3-0 vs. both Brandeis and Wayne State. 

"We had some good wins against top programs like Yale and Ohio State," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "It was a great weekend for our team with our fencers going up against some of the best teams in the country. It was a very positive result overall."
