Rochester Tops Hanover To Advance in NCAA Championship

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester men's soccer team booked a spot in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament with a 1-0 victory over Hanover College of Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, UR earns the right toplay regional host Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon. Kenyon defeated Penn State-Behrend, 5-0. The Lords are 18-1-2, 12-0-1 on their home field. Rochester's record is 12-5-1 with the victory.

The game's only goal came just before the match was one hour old. UR earned a corner kick. Josh Cooley played the corner to Mitch Volis. His shot was saved by Hanover goalkeeper Wil Bedel and pushed to the right post. Cooley got there first and put it back into the middle and into the net.

As the game wound down, Hanover stepped up the offensive pressure, but could not launch a consistent series of dangerous chances. The Rochester defenders did a sound job clearing the ball and chipping it out of danger. Goalkeeper Hugh Curran played very well, reading the proper time to come off the line and pounce on crosses or grab the ball before the red-shirted attackers could converge on it. He finished with two saves as did Bedel.
