CWRU Finishes Spring Break Trip with Three Wins

The ninth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team finished its spring break trip with three wins on Wednesday in Orlando, Florida at the USTA National Campus. The Spartans defeated Rhodes College 8-1, Millsaps University 9-0, and Wheaton College 9-0. With the three wins, CWRU improves to 18-1. Meanwhile, Rhodes falls to 5-6, Millsaps falls to 6-2, and Wheaton drops to 5-5.

In their first matchup of the day, Case Western Reserve took down Rhodes 8-1. The Spartans started the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. Junior Neil Mabee and senior Anthony Kanam won 8-2 at third doubles, followed by sophomore Chaitanya Aduru and junior Jonathan Powell winning 8-3 at second doubles and first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen winning 8-3 at first doubles.

CWRU took the first five singles matchups as well. Kanam won 6-1, 6-1 over Frank Stich at sixth singles, sophomore Aaron Umen defeated Andrew Morton 6-2, 6-1 at third singles, and Powell took down Daniel Trudell 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles. Aduru followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fifth singles over Alex Lloyd, while Chen won 6-2, 6-4 over Phil Lauture at second singles. The Spartans' lone blemish was at first singles, where Hopper fell 6-3, 6-7, 4-10 to Ritwik Chatterjee, who is ranked as the 11th -best singles player in the Atlantic South Region.

In their match against Millsaps, CWRU swept the doubles matches. Senior Zach Hennessey and Aduru started with an 8-0 win at third doubles, Hopper and Kanam followed with an 8-3 win at second doubles, and Powell and Chen finished with an 8-3 win at first doubles.

In singles play, Aduru started with a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Benjamin Falk, and Chen clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Beck at first singles. Kanam followed at fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Trevor Vaccaro, sophomore Max Vicario defeated Hamilton Jackson 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles, and Umen beat John Kimball 6-2, 6-2 at second singles. Powell wrapped up singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jacob Niehaus at third singles.

The Spartans also won all three doubles matches over the Thunder. Junior Aris Jhaveri and first-year Diego Maza started with an 8-0 win at third doubles, Mabee and first-year John Kasner followed with an 8-2 win at first doubles, and junior Earl Hseih and senior Henry Squire finished with an 8-2 win at second doubles.

Mabee began singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Winters at sixth singles, and Squire followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at fifth singles over Andrew Bristol to clinch the match for CWRU. At second singles, Maza defeated Jeremiah Yi 6-2, 6-0, and, at fourth singles, Kasner beat Jacob Panjwani 6-3, 6-2. To finish the match, Jhaveri took down Anderson Park 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, and Hsieh beat Nathan Fruh 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 at third singles.
