Danielle DelPonte Resigns as Brandeis Head Softball Coach

From Brandeis University Athletics

Brandeis University head softball coach Danielle DelPonte has resigned after five years with the Judges in order to pursue opportunities outside of coaching, Director of Athletics Lauren Haynie announced today.

"I am thankful for having had the opportunity to serve as the head softball coach at Brandeis University these last five years," DelPonte said. "The staff, faculty, and administration at Brandeis are second to none and I cannot thank everyone enough for their dedication to the softball program."

"The relationships I have enjoyed along the way are a reflection of the qualities of character and excellence in educating that Brandeis University demands.  I am lucky to have been a part of this outstanding community of educators."

"I am beyond grateful to the student-athletes, each doing all they could to better their program on the field, in the classroom and in the Waltham community.  It was a privilege to lead such an exceptional group of young women.  I wish them all the best."

DelPonte led the University Athletic Association Coaching Staff of the Year in 2019, guiding the Judges to a 29-7-1 record, tied for the second-most wins in a single season in school history. The Judges reached their second-ever NCAA Division III tournament, and first since 2010, advancing to the regional final before seeing the final two days of the regional washed out. The Judges had five All-UAA selections last year, including conference Pitcher of the Year Scottie Todd, and nine total student-athletes were honored in DelPonte's tenure. Three of the five All-UAA selections from 2019 will return in 2020.

Overall, DelPonte posted a 71-64-1 record in four seasons at Brandeis. She helped the Judges to two runner-up finishes in the UAA: in 2016, in her first year as coach, and in 2019.

"This is certainly a bittersweet moment for the Brandeis Athletics community, and especially our softball program," said Haynie. "We have been fortunate for Danielle's leadership over the past four-and-a-half years, and she will be missed. We wish her good luck in her future endeavors and hope that she will always be one of our biggest fans."

Assistant coach Emily Kraytenberg, who has been with the Judges for the past four seasons under DelPonte, will serve as interim coach for the 2020 season. Brandeis will begin a national search for a successor during the 2020 offseason.
