Brandeis University junior Sydney Goldman of Sherman Oaks, California, has been selected as a second-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Goldman is the fourth NFCA All-American in Brandeis program history, the first since Anya Kamber '15 in 2014. Goldman is the first Judge to be named exclusively as a pitcher – Kaitlin Streilein '08 was selected as a utility player who both pitched and played first base in 2008.
"I'm very proud of the work Sydney put in this year," said head coach Dani Bishop. "She worked hard to command the zone and hit her spots which led to her success. Sydney gave us a chance to win every time she took the mound and was the leader of our pitching staff."
"Whenever Sydney steps on the field you know you're going to get 100 percent effort and a strong performance. She is confident and a leader on the mound," added pitching coach Kendall Roy.
Goldman turned in one of the finest pitching seasons in Brandeis program history this year. She went 7-1 this season, winning her first seven decisions, and set two school records: lowest ERA (minimum 40 innings pitched) at 1.23, and most strikeouts per seven innings at 10.32. Goldman threw 57 innings and allowed just 12 runs (10 earned), striking out 84 and walking just 11. Opponents batted just .140 against her (27-193). She threw complete games in eight of her nine starts with four shutouts and five 10-strikeout games. Goldman threw just the second perfect game in Brandeis history in the team's season opener, a 9-0, five-inning win over Worcester State in which she struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced.
Goldman previously earned NFCA First-Team All-New England and All-University Athletic Association honors this season. She was a three-time UAA Pitcher of the Week. Goldman anchored a Brandeis pitching staff that posted a 1.16 team ERA, the second-lowest in Division III at the end of the regular season.
The Judges finished the regular season with a 13-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament for the second time in a row and third in program history. Brandeis won its tournament opener in epic fashion, rallying from five runs down in the seventh inning to defeat fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University, 10-9. The Judges dropped their next two contests, 2-0, to eventual regional champion Tufts and host Husson, to finish their season at 14-3. They will return all but one of their letter-winners for the 2022 season.
Goldman is a 2018 graduate of Notre Dame High School.
