Janean Cuffee of NYU Named MBWA Division III Women's Player of the Year; Meg Barber Named Coach of the Year

From NYU Athletics

Two New York University women's basketball players as well as Head Coach Meg Barber have received honors from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA).

Junior guard Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) was selected Division III Women's Player of the Year, senior guard Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) received Third-Team All-Met honors and Head Coach Meg Barber was named Division III Coach of the Year.

Cuffee, a repeat All-Met First Team selection and a 2019-20 CoSIDA District 3 Academic All-American, is the fifth Violet to earn this prestigious award. She follows Marsha Harris (1996, '97, '98), Jehan Clark (1999), Rachel Wojdowski, 2004, '05), and Jessica McEntee (2007, '09).

Cuffee led the University Athletic Association (UAA) in scoring (20.4 ppg) - the second-highest one-season average in team history - and the Violets in steals (45). She produced five games with at least 30 points, including a season-high 37 against St. John Fisher College on December 7. Cuffee has accumulated 1,075 points in her three-year NYU career, 14th on the team's all-time scoring list.

Barrett led NCAA Division III with 7.5 assists per game. Her 202 assists during the season smashed the old NYU standard of 148 and lifted her four-year total to 435, another program record. Barrett recorded five games of at least 10 assists during the season and finished eighth in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (2.4).

Barber led the Violets to a 21-6 record in 2019-20, including a 10-4 second-place mark in the UAA. The squad earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Emmanuel College before falling to host Bowdoin College in the second round.

"This should aptly be named Coaching Staff of the Year," Barber said. "This recognition is a direct reflection of the unbelievable staff I work with and, of course, the amazing student-athletes that we are so proud to coach and mentor."

Barber, who was also named ECAC Division III Coach of the Year, is the third NYU head coach to receive the MBWA honor. Janice Quinn earned the award six times and Stefano Trompeo was selected in 2009.

"Whenever individual team members are recognized for outstanding on-court achievement, it is just as much an acknowledgment of the team accomplishments and success," Barber added. "I am deeply appreciative of what Janean and Annie have meant to this team both on and off the court. I am proud that our program is gaining some recognition."
