The University of Rochester women's basketball team completed a weekend road trip sweep after a 67-62 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon at Skibo Gymnasium.
Rochester evens its overall record at 12-12 on the season and is 6-7 in the UAA, while Carnegie Mellon is 10-14 overall and 3-10 in the conference.
Sophomore Julianna Okoniewski led the Yellowjackets with 18 points, also finishing with 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. Alexis Sestric scored 15 points and Hannah Lindemuth added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Two Carnegie Mellon players, Makayla Filiere and Emily Archer, led the Tartans with 15 points each. Caityln Clendenin had a double-double scoring 10 points with 13 rebounds.
Rochester led 18-8 after the opening quarter, following a 10-0 spurt over the last 3:39. Seven of the ten points came from senior Lauren Foley.
Carnegie Mellon returned the favor in the second quarter, outscoring the Yellowjackets 19-10 to head into intermission trailing Rochester 28-27. The big spurt was a 10-2 run by the Tartans over three minutes.
In the third, back to back three's from Sestric and Lindemuth put Rochester up five with 8:54 left. UR would hold the lead for nearly the entire quarter until a Megan Jaeb layup with 47 seconds left on the clock but the hosts ahead 47-46.
With 6:41 left in the fourth, the teams were tied at 51-all. Laurel Pereira swished a 3-pointer to put CMU up three, but Rochester scored 10 of the next 13 points to surge ahead by four with just 2:31 on the clock. Both Sestric and Lindemuth hit big 3-pointers in the stretch, while Okoniewski scored four points in the paint.
Over the last couple of minutes, UR hit six of seven free throws, five by Tessa Ludwick to seal the victory.
