Washington University in St. Louis head women's golf coach Mary Swanson was named the 2019-20 Golf Pride Grips Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Central Region Coach of the Year, as announced by the Association Monday. 

Swanson is the fifth WashU coach in school history to earn the honor joining Sean Curtis (2012, 2014, 2015) and Ellen Port (2017).

"I am grateful for this honor and appreciate the recognition from our WGCA awards committee," Swanson said. "The players did all the work and deserve the credit!"

Swanson recently completed her second season at WashU in 2019-20, with the Bears finishing the shortened season ranked No. 2 on Golfstat. 

WashU won its first three tournaments to open the fall season – I-70 Dual, Rhodes Classic and DIII NCAA Preview – and was ranked fifth in NCAA Division III in scoring average (307.64). The Bears also set school records for 18-holes (281) and 36-holes (574) at Rhodes.

Freshman Annie Mascot was named the WGCA National and Rookie of the Year, while senior Samantha Haubenstock joined Mascot on the first team. WashU was the lone team in Division III with a pair of first-team All-Americans. 

The Women's Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents over 650 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
