The University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team was tripped up in its 2020-21 season opener on Friday evening, falling to host Nazareth College 174-126.
 
Rochester earned five event wins, including two from first-year Helena Bardsley. Bardsley won the 200 breaststroke in 2:47.32 and then was first to the wall in the 200 IM in 2:30.32.
 
UR's other winners were Maggie Brennan in the 400 freestyle, clocking in 2:30.32, Kelsey Bartlett in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:30.82, and first-year Marissa Carlson in the 100 backstroke, who won in 1:09.35.
 
Carlson also was a swimmer on Rochester's two runner-up relays on the night. The 200 medley relay team of Bartlett, Sofia Guarnieri, Carlson and Nicole Gelb touched in 2:07.86. The 200 freestyle relay team featured Carlson, Gelb, Guarnieri and Ashley Updike. Their time was 1:54.36.

Guarnieri finished with four runner-up placements, ending second in the 100 freestyle (1:03.68) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.30) individual events.
 
Brennan ended second in the 200 freestyle (2:13.45), while Bartlett also was runner-up in the 100 back (1:10.18).
 
In the diving events, Jaelyn Shaver was second in the 3-meter with a score of 256.42. Reigning All-American Sophie Lever was third on the 1-meter board with a score of 259.49, an NCAA qualifying score, which will put her in the running for All-America consideration in 2021.
 
Other runner-up finishers for the Yellowjackets include Gelb in the 50 free (28.51 seconds), Emily Brzac in the 200 back (2:36.90), Serena Uong in the 100 butterfly (1:10.24) and Anna Cook in the 200 IM (2:33.45).
