CWRU Continues Florida Trip with Wins over Carnegie Mellon, Lehigh

The No. 9 Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team swept its two matches on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida to extend its winning streak to 10 matches. CWRU defeated No. 13 Carnegie Mellon University 9-0 earlier in the day and defeated Lehigh University 6-1 in the later match. The Spartans improve to 15-1 on the season, while the Tartans fall to 6-4, and the Mountain Hawks fall to 4-5. 

Case Western Reserve started the match against Carnegie Mellon by sweeping the doubles matches. At third doubles, junior Jonathan Powell and senior Zach Hennessey defeated Ray Boppana and Robert Levin 8-4. Senior Anthony Kanam and junior Neil Mabee followed with an 8-6 win at second doubles over Sam Gibson and Jonathan Nottingham. To finish the doubles matches first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen bested Joshua Pinckney and Raahil Doshi 8-5.

Kanam started singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Matthew Poh at sixth singles. A 7-5, 6-0 victory for Powell over Doshi at fourth singles clinched the match for CWRU. Sophomore Chaitanya Aduru followed up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Clark Safran, while Hopper took down Boppana, ranked 35th nationally, at first singles 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Aaron Umen won a hard-fought match at third singles 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 over Gibson, and Chen finished the singles sweep with another tight match, defeating Levin 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 at second singles.

Against Lehigh, a school that competes at the Division I level and uses Division I scoring, CWRU took two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. At first doubles, Hopper and Chen defeated Zack Elliott and Harry Wang 6-0, while at second doubles, Kanam and Mabee beat Gary Fishkin and Jacob Edelchik 6-3. Powell and Hennessey fell at third doubles to Jeremy Learner and Steven Nazaroff 6-0.

To start singles play, Aduru defeated Matt Kleiman 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles. Chen fell in three sets to Wang, 6-3, 3-6, 7-10, at second singles, but Powell beat Learner, 6-4, 7-6, at fourth singles to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. Umen clinched the match for CWRU with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 win at third singles over Fishkin, while Hopper added to the Spartans' win margin with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 win over Elliot. Kanam ended the match by defeating Edelchik 7-5, 7-5, at sixth singles.
