The Emory women's tennis team enjoyed a successful outdoor home opener to its spring season on Saturday by defeating South Region foe Sewanee.  The No. 3-ranked Eagles raised their spring mark to 2-1 following an 8-1 triumph over the 31st-ranked Tigers who suffered their first setback in four outings.

Emory closed out doubles action by winning two of the three matches.  Junior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Jessica Fatemi accounted for the first point of the afternoon with a decisive 8-2 verdict against Emma Smith and Taylor Sprouse at the No. 2 post. After Sewanee knotted the match following a triumph at first doubles, the tandem of freshman Katelyn Thomas and Alexa Goetz gave Emory the lead for good with an 8-3 outcome vs. Darby Duval and Caroline Adams.

Emory was dominant in singles, winning all six encounters in straight sets. Gonzalez-Rico pocketed her first win of the spring 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 against Cat Owen, while junior Defne Olcay battled to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Emma Smith at second singles. Other singles winners included Goetz at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4, vs. Ellie Czuta,, sophomore Christina Watson at No. 4 against Duval, 6-1, 6-0, sophomore Emman Cartledge, 6-0, 6-0, over Caroline Adams at No. 5 and Fatemi at No. 6 with a 6-0, 7-5, verdict against Morgan Downing.
