Doug Milne, Kevin Marciano Each Record Two Hits, Two Runs Batted In at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass.--Sophomores Doug Milne and Kevin Marciano each recorded two hits and two runs batted in as part of a 10-hit Western New England attack, but host Brandeis needed an eight-run fourth inning to stave off a furious Golden Bears comeback for a 9-7 non-conference baseball win on Thursday. The Golden Bears fall to 8-14 overall while the Judges improve to 11-13.

In addition to Milne and Marciano, senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino and sophomore T.J. Wyrebek had two hits apiece for the Golden Bears.

Dominic Schwartz and Tom McCarthy led the Brandeis offense, which produced 12 hits, with three apiece. Brian Allen added a two-run double and pinch-hitter Sam Miller contributed two RBI on a single.

After two scoreless innings, Western New England struck first with a run in the top of the third on a RBI-single by freshman Daniel Morin.

After Brandeis got a run back in its bottom half, the Golden Bears reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the next fourth on a Marciano RBI-double to left field.

The Judges, however, countered again by taking control with eight runs on seven hits, taking advantage of a WNE miscue and a passed ball, while sending 12 men to the plate. Six of the runs in the decisive inning were unearned.

But the Golden Bears didn't give up, clawing back with three runs in the sixth to make it a game again at 9-5. Marciano started it with a fielder's choice RBI and Milne capped it with a two-run double to left field.

Then Western New England pulled even closer with single runs in both the seventh and eighth. Sophomore Scott Hubener singled home WNE's sixth run and Wyrebek accounted for the final margin with a RBI-single up the middle.

After a stretch of eight games in six days, Western New England will take Friday off to prepare for a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheaders against Curry at home on Saturday and at Wentworth on Sunday, both starting at noon.
