Scots Defeat Conference Foe in Saturday Split

Janaki Jagannathan GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster women's tennis team split a pair of matchups at DePauw University on Saturday.

The Scots opened the day with a 6-3 win over its conference foe and later took a 9-0 loss to Washington University of St. Louis.

Against DePauw, Wooster led early 2-1 after doubles play. The No. 2 team of Katie Materick and Janaki Jagannathan held on for an 8-7 (5) win, and the No. 3 team of Cherry Patlolla and Kim Nguyen pulled through 8-4.

In singles play, the Scots took the No. 4 and No. 5 flights right out of the gate. Nguyen won at the No. 4 position 6-0, 6-1, and Materick won at the No. 5 spot 6-3, 6-1.

DePauw took the No. 1 flight next before sophomore Abby Aitken clinched the match at the No. 6 flight 6-4, 6-4. Jagannathan gave Wooster its other point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 3 position.

The Scots did not have much luck against Washington University, falling 9-0. Jagannathan was the only Scot to force a third set in a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (2) loss in the No. 3 flight.

Jagannathan and Otilia Oita earlier fell 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles flight against Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder, who are ranked fifth regionally.

Patlolla and Nguyen fell 8-1 in the No. 2 flight, and Materick and Aitken took an 8-3 defeat at No. 3.

In singles play, Patlolla had to retire in the second set after being on the wrong end of a 6-2 first set. Oita fell 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 flight.

Nguyen won three games in a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 4. Materick fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and Aitken fell 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 slot.

Wooster moves to 3-3 overall. They host Denison University on Feb. 27 at the Aspen Racquet Club.
