WOOSTER, Ohio – Four pitchers from No. 21 ranked Case Western Reserve University combined to throw a 2-0 shutout against The College of Wooster, as the Fighting Scots were held to four hits, three by Frank Vance, in the northeast Ohio foes' annual non-conference meeting that took place on Wednesday afternoon at Art Murray Field.

It marked the first time Wooster has been shutout in 65 games.

Steve Hagen was sharp on the mound for Wooster (13-7), giving up two runs in six innings on five hits while striking out three without a walk, but took a tough-luck loss (2-4) for the second consecutive outing.

Case Western Reserve (19-6) produced single tallies off of Hagen in the first and second innings. Starting the game with back-to-back singles, the Spartans moved the runners up a base on a groundout to the right side, and then another grounder plated William Meador.

In the second, Antonio Damiano took a hit by pitch with one out, then Jordan Dague lined a double down the left-field line that barely stayed fair. It appeared that the Fighting Scots would get out of the jam when Vance handled the next grounder and cut down Damiano at home for the second out, however, Meador came up with a clutch two-out hit to plate Dague and give Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead.

Wooster had a couple of scoring opportunities. Vance doubled to straightaway center in the fifth with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Zac Mathie worked his way on via a walk, but a shallow pop-up to right-center and a routine fly to center ended the threat.

In the seventh, John McLain took a leadoff walk, Vance dribbled one through the left side for runners on first and second with no outs. A pair of Spartan relievers combined for a strikeout, liner to center, and infield pop-up to keep the Scots off the scoreboard.

Jake Shields was the winning pitcher (4-1), working six-plus innings of three-hit scoreless ball, while Daniel Sondag took care of the eighth and the ninth for his fifth save.

Wooster returns to the field Thursday, hosting Baldwin Wallace University (14-10) at 4 p.m.
