Women’s Basketball Topples Oglethorpe 88-43 During Midweek Matchup

The Emory University women's basketball team defeated the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Tuesday night 88-43 in the first doubleheader of the season.

Junior Daniella Aronsky had another career day posting 22 points, the second best of her career, and went 6-8 beyond the perimeter. Her six threes also tie the second best of her career and marks a season best. Aronsky also led the team with five assists on the night placing her seventh in the Division III ranks with 6.2 assists per game. Following her D3hoops.com National Team of the Week honor, graduate student Claire Brock posted 18 points on the night with three rebounds. Sophomore Katherine Martini posted a career-high six rebounds for the Eagles followed by five from freshman Mary Mullinax.

The Eagles started early with a 7-0 lead with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter highlighted by points from Brock and senior Izzy Munson. Martini entered the game and helped the Eagles to a 12-9 advantage before a late three from freshman Alexandra Loucopoulos helped Emory to a 15-9 lead with 2:08 left in the quarter. Martini continued her scoring run giving the Eagles a 19-11 lead going into the second quarter.

Emory was held scoreless for two minutes in the second before Brock sank her first three of the game to give Emory a 22-16 lead with 7:42 left in the half. The Stormy Petrels looked for a comeback before back to back threes from Aronsky and Munson gave the Eagles a 28-20 lead. Aronsky ended up with four baskets from beyond the perimeter in the second quarter with the Eagles heading into the break with a 43-29 lead.

Aronsky continued her scoring late into the third quarter making three back to back shots for seven points forcing a timeout from Oglethorpe with 3:28 left in the quarter. Sophomore Lily Kennedy showed up big for Emory in the third quarter with three points coming late to help the Eagles take a 66-37 score into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles went on a short 5-2 run with 7:21 left in the game before a timeout from Emory to recoup. Out of the timeout, Loucopoulos scored six points for the Eagles on layups bringing the score to 77-39 Emory. Late in the game, a group of freshmen saw the court posting seven points securing the 88-43 win for the Eagles.

Emory was able to outshoot the Stormy Petrels from beyond the perimeter shooting 52.0% compared to Oglethorpe's 12.0%. The Eagles were also able to take advantage of turnovers scoring 32 points off turnovers while also being able to capitalize on 39 points from the bench.

The Eagles will be back at the WoodPec on Sunday, December 3 at 2 pm to face Rhodes in the final matchup before winter break.
