Scoring Drought in Second Half Sinks Tartans at W&J

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team faced Washington and Jefferson College on Friday, November 10 in the home opener for the Presidents in their Tip-Off Tournament. The Presidents, who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll, built a third-quarter lead and went on to top the Tartans, 70-60. The Tartans are now 1-1 for the season.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans built a 17-9 first-quarter lead, as junior Anisha Chintala scored the last basket of the frame with 17 seconds to play.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs had seven straight points in the first quarter and sophomore Ava Arias picked up assists on back-to-back scoring plays by the Tartans.
  • The Tartans led in the second quarter until Hannah Archer hit a three-pointer to give the Presidents a 23-22 lead with 5:17 to go before the break.
  • The Tartans retook the lead five straight points before surrendering six straight to the home team to trail 29-27 with 10 seconds to go in the half.
  • Junior Catherine Or nailed a three-pointer with two ticks left on the clock to give the Tartans a 30-29 lead at the break.
  • The teams traded runs to start the third quarter before Or gave the Tartans what would be their last lead of the game at 39-38 with her second triple of the match.
  • The Presidents closed the final 5:19 of the third quarter with a 15-6 run and didn't look back.

For the Tartans

  • Or led the Tartans with 19 points while Gibbs finished with 17 points.
  • Chintala and sophomore Liv LaFond each tallied nine points.
  • Or grabbed nine rebounds with Gibbs picking up eight.
  • Or also led the team in assists with three.

For the Presidents

  • Meghan Dryburgh led the team with 16 points and 18 rebounds.
  • Sarah Berardelli scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Stellanie Loutsion scored 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.
