Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to #3 CNU, 57-47

The Emory University women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with a loss against the No. 3 ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Jean Edge Classic in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Senior Izzy Munson started the season strong with leading the team with five defensive rebounds and 15 points to tie the second best of her career. Sophomore Lily Kennedy followed Munson with eight points and five rebounds. Also on the rebound train was junior Erin Martin who totaled six rebounds, four defensive. Junior Daniella Aronsky posted five assists on the day to lead both squads.

The first quarter saw two ties early on before the Eagles went on a nine-point scoring run highlighted by five points from Munson to take a 13-9 lead into the second quarter. The Captains were able to gain some momentum in the second quarter after a Caitlin Crump layup with 8:13 left gave CNU the lead.

The defense continued from both sides allowing the Eagles to score just six points in the second quarter and giving the Captains a 25-19 lead at the half.

Emory was able to cut CNU's lead to five in the third quarter thanks to six points from Kennedy but the Captains continued their energy taking a 41-31 lead at the end of the third.

The scoring continued from each team with CNU holding a nine-point advantage with 7:00 remaining but the Eagles weren't able to answer to the Captains' jump shots ending the game 57-47.

Emory will face the NC Wesleyan Battling Bishops on Sunday, November 12 at 3 pm for the last game of the Jean Edge Classic in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
