Tartans Open UAA Season with Double-Digit Win Versus Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened the University Athletic Association (UAA) slate with a 75-56 home victory against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, January 6. The Tartans are now 9-3 overall and 1-0 while the Spartans drop to 7-5 and 0-1.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans took a 21-15 first-quarter lead by shooting 10-17 from the field and scoring 12 points in the paint. They also dished out seven assists on the 10 made baskets with junior Anisha Chintala recording three of those assists.
  • The Tartans started the second quarter hitting three of six attempts which allowed the Spartans to cut the deficit to five points with 5:44 to go in the quarter.
  • Carnegie Mellon made six of eight shots to end the period and used a 13-3 run to lead by as many as 15 points late in the frame.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs and junior Catherine Or each had 15 points at the break with Gibbs making 7-of-8 from the field including one from long range.
  • The Tartans pushed their 42-28 lead to 58-36 with 1:47 to go in the third quarter on junior Isha Nambisan's second three-pointer of the period.
  • The Tartans and Spartans traded points for the duration of the fourth quarter with the Tartans leading by at least 18 points.
  • Chintala led the Tartans in the final frame with seven points while Or dished out two assists.

For the Tartans

  • Or led the Tartans with her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also finished with a season-best five assists.
  • Gibbs tallied 19 points while Chintala finished with 15 points.
  • Chintala also recorded five assists and five steals.
  • Sophomore Ava Arias recorded a career-high in rebounds with 16 and in blocks with five.

For the Spartans

  • Kayla Characklis led the team with 20 points.
  • Sarah Mitchell scored 12 points.
  • Morgan Micallef led the team off the bench with seven rebounds.

Notes

  • The Tartans are now 15-15 all-time at home against Case Western Reserve and 8-4 at home under head coach Jacquie Hullah.
  • Or is now averaging 18.8 points per game in five contests against the Spartans for her career.
