Two Score in Double Figures as Tartans Fall to Maroons

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted the University of Chicago on Sunday, February 4. Despite 24 points from junior Anisha Chintala, the Tartans couldn't get past the Maroons, who are receiving votes for the third straight week in the D3hoops.com Top 25, and fell 70-57. The Tartans are now 10-10 overall and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Maroons are 14-6 and 7-2.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans trailed by five after the first quarter after shooting 33.3% from the floor.
  • Freshman Kayla Delmore hit a three-pointer to start the second quarter and Chintala followed with a layup to tie the score at 17-all.
  • UChicago answered with a 10-1 run for its largest lead of the half with 7:09 still to play.
  • The Tartans then outscored the Maroons, 14-7, to end the period and trail by three at the break.
  • The Tartans dropped 19 points on UChicago in the second frame, making 7-of-12 from the field.
  • Chintala answered the call for the Tartans in the first half, making 6-of-10 from the field for 13 points, including the last basket of the half with three seconds to go.
  • Delmore again opened a quarter with a three-pointer and Chintala followed a made jumper by UChicago with her second three-pointer of the game to give the Tartans a 37-36 lead.
  • UChicago would score the next seven points before Delmore connected for another three-pointer to have the Tartans trail 43-40 with 7:38 to go in the period.
  • The Tartans would go scoreless for the next six minutes before a triple by Delmore was good while UChicago built a 16-point lead to end the quarter.
  • After not scoring for the first six minutes of the final frame, the Tartans finished with 14 points in the quarter with eight coming from Chintala and four from Delmore.
  • UChicago also went scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth and finished with 11 points to win by 13 points.

For the Tartans

  • Chintala led all players with 24 points and made three three-pointers for the second time this season and in her career.
  • Delmore tallied 16 points, three off her career-high.
  • Sophomores Ava Black and Ava Arias each grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Black and Arias also had four assists apiece, with Black recording a season-high and Arias a career-high.

For the Maroons

  • Sophia North led with 17 points, making a team-high four three-pointers.
  • Alexis Clark and Lindsey Carter each scored 10 points.
  • Three players grabbed five rebounds and Marissa Powe and Ellie Gross each had six assists.

Notes

  • The Tartans played without their two leading scorers: junior Catherine Or (15.4 ppg) and sophomore Savannah Gibbs (14.3 ppg) who had 19 and 14 points, respectively, last weekend at UChicago.
