Baseball Wins Home Opener; Defeats Oglethorpe 7-4

The Emory University baseball team picked up a win in its home opener Tuesday afternoon, defeating crosstown rival Oglethorpe University, 7-4, at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Senior Joey Bock earned the win in his season debut, spinning five innings of one-run ball while totaling three strikeouts. Senior Mike Golob and junior Tyler McLoughlin were locked down out of the pen in the final innings, combining for two scoreless frames and three punch outs. McLoughlin worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth inning to record his second save of his career.

At the plate, five Eagles combined for nine hits with seniors Jack Masonis, Ellis Schwartz and juniors Steven Hunt and Jacob Grossman all tallying multi-hit games. Seven different players drove in a run while team went 5-for-5 on the base paths, led by Scwartz's three steals.

The Eagles struck early, scoring five runs across the first two innings, including a four-run second to chase Oglethorpe starter Colby James from the game. A one-out triple by Hunt opened the crooked scoring and would score the next at-bat on a single by Grossman. Another single by sophomore Blake Dincman plated Grossman before sophomore Jack Halloran worked a bases loaded walk later in the inning. Senior Henry Pelinski rounded the Eagles' scoring in the second as he brought home Masonis on a sac fly to center.

Emory extended its lead to 7-1 with two more runs crossing home plate in the fourth. McLoughlin had the team's second bases loaded walk of the contest before Hunt plated Pelinski with a sac fly in the next plate appearance.

The Stormy Petrels got three runs back in the seventh as they opened the inning with four straight hits. However, that was as close as they would get as sophomore Ryan Reynolds escaped further trouble in the inning before Golob and McLoughlin finished out the game.

Next up for the Eagles will be a road trip to LaGrange next Wednesday, February 22, as Emory battles the third-ranked Panthers in a 7:00pm first pitch.
