CMS Baseball Uses Nine-Run Fourth to Take Series Win from Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. - Julian Sanders, Jack Potter and Carson Bridges each had two-run singles as part of a nine-run fourth inning as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team defeated Emory 13-3 on Sunday to take the series from the Eagles two games to one.

With the win, CMS moves to 4-2 on the season with two series wins over George Fox and Emory, both of which came after the Stags dropped the first game and won the next two. The Eagles slip to 4-3 on the year with the loss.

CMS had nine players account for its 10 hits, with Sanders (2-for-3, two runs, two RBI) the only Stag with more than one. Bridges also walked twice to end his day 1-for-1 with two RBI and reaching base all three times he came to the plate. Ryan Warm threw five innings, allowing four hits and two runs to improve his record on the year to 2-0, both of which came in rubber-game starts.

The Stags blew it open in the fourth, but got things started on a high note with a three-run first. Tyler Shaw, Marco Castillo and Brandon Rho opened the game with three straight singles for the game's first run, and a passed ball and an error allowed Castillo and Rho to score, respectively.

Emory got one run back in the bottom of the first, but Castillo made a big play with two runners on, turning an unassisted double play on a line drive with runners on second and third. CMS took a 4-1 lead in the third when Sanders led off with a single and came home on an RBI single from Aidan Booth. The Eagles answered that run in the bottom of the third, but CMS then put up an unanswerable nine spot in the fourth to take a 13-2 lead.

Castillo reached on an error, Sanders was hit by a pitch and Evan Kelly singled to load the bases with one out. Nick Wilson singled to plate one run, and Potter had a two-run single to make it a 7-2 CMS lead. After an error re-loaded the bases, Bridges plated two runs with a single to right-center. Shaw walked to re-load the bases again, Castillo was hit by a pitch to plate a run, and Rho had an RBI groundout. Sanders then capped it off with a two-run single up the middle to finish off the CMS scoring for the day by making it a 13-2 game.

Lucas Welch threw an inning of shutout relief in the sixth, and Pieter van Wingerden got the final out to enforce the 10-run rule after seven innings.

CMS will be back at home this weekend to take on Centenary at 12 noon on Saturday, and Bridgewater at 12 noon on Sunday, before a rematch with Centerary on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
