Tartans Drop Road UAA Contest at Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y..) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to the University of Rochester for its first road University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, January 19. The Yellowjackets pulled away in the fourth quarter after leading by two to win 84-67. The Tartans are now 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the UAA while Rochester moves to 7-8 and 2-2.

How It Happened

  • There were eight lead changes and five times throughout the game with Rochester taking the final lead with 10 seconds to go in the third period.
  • Both teams made five baskets in the first period but three of the hoops for Rochester counted for three points and the Yellowjackets led 14-10 after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore Piper Ligotti led the Tartans on the boards with seven in the first period.
  • Rochester increased their lead to 10 on Hannah Lindemuth's second three-pointer of the second period and led by as many as 11 before the Tartans rallied with a 14-5 run to trail by two when sophomore Savannah Gibbs made a layup as time expired for the half.
  • Both teams scored 23 points in the third period with the Tartans leading by as many as six points following a fast break layup by freshman Allie Heyer with 2:58 on the clock.
  • Rochester answered and led by one before freshman Kayla Delmore drained a three-pointer to give the Tartans back the lead, 54-52.
  • Ligotti also hit a three-pointer in the last minute of the third period and had the Tartans ahead 57-56 before Rochester scored the final three points and never trailed again.
  • Rochester converted 8-of-15 shots in the final frame while the Tartans made just 4-of-16.

For the Tartans

  • Junior Catherine Or finished with 14 points and eight rebounds with three assists.
  • Gibbs tallied 13 points and dished out five assists.
  • Sophomore Ava Arias led the team with 11 rebounds and scored nine points.
  • Ligotti finished with eight rebounds and eight points.

For the Yellowjackets

  • Lindemuth finished with five three-pointers and 22 points to lead four players in double figures.
  • Callie McCulley closed the game with 17 points while Abby Gress had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Notes

  • The Tartans tied their season low in turnovers with 10.
  • The Tartans have now shot less than 35% in their two UAA losses while they shot better than 52% in their two UAA wins.
