(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team faced 10th-ranked Emory University on Sunday, January 21 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. The Eagles avoided the upset by connecting on seven more three-pointers than the Tartans for a 62-52 win. The Tartans are now 10-6 overall and 2-3 in the UAA while the Eagles are 14-2 and 4-1.

How It Happened

  • With the score at 6-6, Emory used a 12-0 run over two minutes and thirty seconds fueled by eight points by graduate student Claire Brock, the UAA's leading scorer.
  • Junior Anisha Chintala ended the scoreless drought for the Tartans with a driving layup.
  • A layup at the buzzer by sophomore Savannah Gibbs made it 20-12 in favor of the Eagles after the first period of play.
  • The Tartans won the second quarter by scoring 18 points on 53.3% shooting to trail by just three points at halftime.
  • The Tartans missed their first eight three-point attempts before junior Catherine Or hit one from the corner to make it 31-26 with 1:21 to go. Sophomore Piper Ligotti then drained one at the buzzer for the 33-31 halftime score.
  • Three third-quarter three-pointers helped the Eagles maintain the lead although another bucket to end a period by the Tartans, this one a driving layup by Chintala made it a six-point game heading into the fourth period.
  • The Eagles extended their lead to 12 points five minutes and 36 seconds into the final frame by hitting 5-of-9 from the field while the Tartans were 3-of-7 in the first six minutes.
  • Neither team had much offense in the final four minutes and the Eagles went on for the 62-52 victory.

For the Tartans

  • Chintala led the team with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting while Gibbs finished with 13 points.
  • Ligotti and Or each tallied nine points while Or grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out four assists.

For the Eagles

  • Brock finished with 26 points and made six of the team's nine three-pointers.
  • Daniella Aronsky and Alexandra Loucopoulos each scored eight points.
