Tartans Stifle Rochester for 37-Point Win at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened its final home weekend in University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 78-41 victory against the University of Rochester. The Tartans are now 11-12 overall and 3-9 in the UAA while the Yellowjackets move to 10-13 and 5-7.

How It Happened

  • There was only one lead change in the game, as the Yellowjackets scored on their first possession before the Tartans answered with four straight and never trailed the rest of the game.
  • The Tartans' largest lead of the first quarter was five points which occurred twice after a step-back jumper by sophomore Ava Arias and a jumper by freshman Allie Heyer.
  • The second quarter is when the Tartans exploded for a double-digit lead, as they hit three straight long-range shots by three different players to lead 27-16 with 6:57 still to go.
  • Six of the Tartans' nine made baskets in the second quarter counted for three points and they built a 24-point advantage at the halfway point of the game.
  • Rochester struggled from the field in the first half, making 27.0% of its attempts while the Tartans made 48.6% and 58.3% of their long-range shots.
  • Carnegie Mellon maintained its shooting prowess in the third quarter making 10-of-20 and outscored the Yellowjackets by six points to add to its advantage.
  • Neither team shot great in the final period but junior Catherine Or scored eight of her game-high 27 points in the frame making 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line.
  • Senior Sam Glowasky made the fourth basket by the Tartans in the fourth frame while the Yellowjackets made just two shots from the floor.

For the Tartans

  • Or's 27 points and 12 rebounds counted for her sixth double-double of the season. She finished with a stat line of 10-of-16 from the field, 3-of-6 from three, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs ruled the paint with 18 points and five assists.
  • Arias recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Heyer finished with 10 points off the bench for her 10th game in double figures this season.

For the Yellowjackets

  • Haley Dumlak was the only player to reach double figures as she scored 12 points.
  • The team shot a season-worst 25.4% from the floor.

Notes

  • The Tartans hit 7-of-12 from three in the first half and just 1-of-9 in the second half.
  • In the first meeting between the teams this year, there were eight lead changes and five ties before the fourth period.
  • Or, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point earlier this season, now has 1,078 career points and is 11th all-time in program history.
