Potential Game Winner Bounces Off Rim as Tartans Fall to NYU, 80-79

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted New York University (NYU) on Friday, February 7 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, falling to the Violets, 80-79, after a shot by junior Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J. / Marlboro) bounced off the rim with seconds remaining.

The Tartans held the lead for much of the second half until Jaden Narwal hit a three-pointer with 5:42 to play giving the Violets a 71-70 lead. The Tartans took back the lead on the next possession on a layup by senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) but it was the last lead of the game for the Tartans.

Weiss's shot came with three seconds left after the Tartans pushed the ball up the court following a defensive rebound off a missed free throw, but his shot bounced up and away from the rim and no one could secure the rebound for a second attempt.

Five Tartans scored in double figures for the sixth time this season with this game marking the second loss. Junior Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion) led the group with 17 points. Senior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla. / Trinity Prep) scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. Howarth and fellow senior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) each scored 13 points while freshman Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty) had 11 points.

Bobby Hawkinson led the Violets with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Ethan Feldman had 16 points, Nick Macarchuk 12 points and Jimmy Martinelli 11 points.

The Tartans will next host 25th-ranked Brandeis University on Sunday, February 9 at 12:00 p.m.
