Women’s Basketball Ends Win Streak with 72-58 Loss to Chicago

The Emory University women's basketball team dropped its second game of the season on Sunday afternoon to the Chicago Maroons, 72-58.

The Eagles now sit 12-2 on the year and hold a 2-1 record in UAA play after the second conference weekend. Junior Morgan Laudick led the Eagles once again scoring 14 points and shooting 7-14 from the field. Fellow junior Erin Martin had nine rebounds on the day and shot 4-4 from the line. Despite outshooting the Maroons in free throws, the Eagles shot one of their lowest three point percentages (13.3) of the season compared to Chicago's 35.7 percent.

The first quarter was a back and forth battle between the two teams with Emory holding a slight 5-4 advantage thanks to a three pointer from graduate student Claire Brock. Later in the quarter, Emory broadened the lead to 13-7 on a layup from sophomore Lily Kennedy with 4:17 left on the clock before taking a 19-13 lead into the second quarter after a layup from freshman Alexandra Loucopoulos in the final minute.

After taking a 23-15 advantage in the second quarter, the Maroons were able to close the gap bringing the score to 27-24 with just under five minutes left in the half. Back to back layups from Loucopoulos brought in more points for the Eagles but the Maroons were following right behind giving Emory a 33-30 lead with 3:25 in the quarter. Chicago was able to bring the Eagles to a one-point lead before a late layup gave Emory a 37-34 advantage heading into the locker room.

The third quarter saw three ties in the first four minutes before the Maroons were able to take their first lead of the game with 4:51 remaining on the clock. The remainder of the quarter was slow on both sides with Chicago going on a 5-3 run to hold onto a 50-47 lead entering the fourth quarter.

A three pointer from Martin started the fourth quarter tying the game at 50 before Chicago went on a 9-2 run to take a 59-52 lead with 5:21 left in the game. After a jumper from Laudick brought the score to 62-54, the Maroons ended the game with a 10-4 run in the last four minutes to secure the win.

The Eagles will be back in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, January 19 at 5:30 PM for the first UAA home game of the season against Case Western Reserve.
