Women’s Basketball Downs #23 Washington and Lee; Brock Posts Career-High 39 Points

The Emory University women's basketball team completed the upset against the No. 23 ranked Washington and Lee Generals on Saturday in Lexington, Virginia. The Eagles were led by graduate student Claire Brock who posted a career-high 39 points which ties the second best number in program history.

Following Brock with another career-high was sophomore Katherine Martini who recorded 18 points on the day. Junior Erin Martin finished the game with 12 rebounds, her best so far this season, and posted three steals. Junior Daniella Aronsky led the team with six assists on the day, the third best of the season.

The Eagles started the game with a 5-2 lead before the Generals were able to take a 9-5 advantage with 6:22 left in the first it quarter. Five points from senior Izzy Munson gave the Eagles a 10-9 lead before Brock started her scoring spree helping the Eagles to a 12-9 lead with 4:40 left. Washington and Lee was able to close the gap before back to back threes from Brock helped the Eagles take a 23-20 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the Generals attempting a comeback before they were able to go up 34-32 with 4:07 on the clock in the second quarter. The Eagles were able to tie the game at 38 thanks to a jumper from Munson and held a 43-40 advantage at the half.

The third quarter was a back and forth battle between the two teams seeing three lead changes with 6:15 left in the quarter. Three points from Martini were enough to help the Eagles take a 50-48 advantage with 4:26 left. The lead changed again with the Generals taking a 59-56 lead into the fourth quarter.

The first minute and forty seconds of the fourth quarter were scoreless with the Generals going up 61-56. The game was scoreless again until back to back threes from Brock and Martini with 5:23 left closed the gap and gave Washington and Lee a slight 63-62 advantage. The last two minutes of the game saw the Eagles go on a 12-8 run with the Generals' effort falling short to secure the win 86-78.

The Eagles will be back in Atlanta on Tuesday, November 28 to face the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels at 6 pm in the first doubleheader of the season.
