Tartans Split Midweek Doubleheader at Waynesburg

(WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University's softball team played a doubleheader against Waynesburg University. The Tartans won the first game, 5-1, before falling 7-3 in game two.

Game 1

  • Faith Lawrence recorded an RBI with a single to center field, advancing to second on the throw, allowing sophomore Maya Goodwin to score in the top of the second.
  • Junior Libby Eichberger also recorded an RBI with a single to right field with Lawrence scoring in the second inning.
  • Senior Kiera Boucher homered to left field, making the score 3-0 in the top of the third.
  • Lawrence collected a second RBI in the third inning after she hit a triple to center field with sophomore Koko Sagae scoring.
  • The final Tartan run was scored in the top of the third after sophomore Kyr Brenneman flied out to the left field with Lawrence scoring on the sacrifice fly.
  • Waynesburg scored in the bottom of the sixth, making the final score 5-1.
  • Amanda Smith was tough in the circle for the Tartans, striking out 16 batters while allowing four hits.

Game 2

  • Waynesburg came out swinging in the first inning, scoring six runs off six hits and two Tartan errors.
  • The Tartans scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning when freshman Lindsey Murai scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Abbey Reese scored from third on a single to right field by Boucher.
  • Waynesburg added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Freshman Jasmine Chao led off the sixth inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by the centerfielder. Chao would later score on a sacrifice fly by Murai to make it 7-3.

Notes

  • Smith's 16 strikeouts set a new single-game school record, topping Scotty McGee's 15 strikeouts in 2021.
  • Boucher's home run was the first of the season for the Tartans.
