Eagles Dominate First Day of Singles and Doubles at ITA Fall Regional

The Emory university women's tennis team started their second tournament of the season at the ITA South Regionals in Sewanee, Tennessee on Friday morning winning each match they played in.

The Eagles dominated day one with eight players competing in both the singles and doubles main draw and all singles matches were won in straight sets.

Sophomore Emily Kantrovitz started the day with a straight set win (6-0, 6-0) over Berry in the first round before taking the second round match against North Carolina Wesleyan 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Yanire Marte continued the hot start to her career defeating Centre in the first round with a 6-0, 6-0 line and a 6-3, 6-1 big win over Sewanee in round two.

Senior Ilayda Baykan continued the domination for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set win against Oglethorpe followed by a 6-0, 6-2 in over Rhodes in the second round. Sophomore Iris Berman defeated Sewanee with a 6-1, 6-0 victory before defeating Methodist with a 6-0, 6-3 decision. The straight set wins continued with sophomore Alyssa Margolin taking her match against Asbury 6-1, 6-1 and her second match against Millsaps (6-0, 6-1).

Other big wins came from senior Ana Cristina Perez with her 6-0, 6-0 decisions over Piedmont and Rhodes and a 6-1, 6-3 victory for sophomore Alessia Martinez against Millsaps. Martinez went on to dominate her match against Methodist with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Junior Eliza McPherron rounded out singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Berry and a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Millsaps.

Once again, the powerful duo of Kantrovitz and Perez helped lead the way in doubles with their 8-1 victory over Rhodes in the first round and their 8-2 win against Piedmont in round two. Marte and Martinez also dominated their doubles matches with an 8-2 win over Piedmont in the first round and an 8-2 decision in round two against Asbury.

Baykan and Berman earned an 8-0 shutout win in their first round matchup against Covenant before taking their second match 8-1 over Centre.

The Eagles will continue play tomorrow in the ITA South Regionals competing in the quarterfinals with play set to begin at 8 am.
