Reavis goes for 26, but women fall to #11 Tufts, 84-70

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team got a career-high 26 points from senior Emma Reavis (Miami, Okla./Deerfield Acad. (Mass.), but the Judges couldn't hold off 11th-ranked Tufts University in an 84-70 defeat today in Red Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jumbos started strong, outscoring Brandeis, 29-18, in the first quarter. They pushed their lead as large as 13 in the first half on a Mallory Folliard 3-pointer with 7:40 to go that made it 37-24.  
  • Brandeis answered with a trifecta from senior Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y. /Staten Island Academy). The Judges stayed close to the visitors and ended the second quarter on a 9-2 run over the last 3:13 to close with 47-44 at halftime.
  • Tufts went up by 6 again early in the third quarter, but back-to-back trifectas by sophomore Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Marchese tied the contest at 54-54 with 6:50 left in the period.
  • At that point, the Tufts defense clamped down, outscoring Brandeis 11-0 the rest of the way in the third to take a 65-54 lead.
  • The Jumbos extended the run to 18 in a row by scoring the first seven points of the fourth to take their largest lead of the game. Brandeis was able to get within 11 points on a Reavis lay-up with 3:45 remaining before the final 15-point final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Reavis led Brandeis with her career-high 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 from the line. She also had four rebounds and came up one shy of a career-best with four steals.
  • Reavis had eight points in the first quarter and nine in the fourth.
  • Marchese also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
  • First-year forward Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) added 11 points and four rebounds. She has scored in double figures in four of her five collegiate contests.
  • Tufts was paced by Maggie Russell, who went for 31 points on 12-of-23 shooting with a 3-pointer and 6-of-7 from the line.
  • Hannah Kelly added 16 points and Annika Decker had 15 for the visitors.
  • Sarah Crossett led all players with 13 rebounds and five assists.
  • Tufts outrebounded Brandeis, 44-33.
  • Although Brandeis forced more turnovers, 19-13, the Jumbos had a 19-15 advantage in points off the miscues.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was the first time in her career that Reavis scored better than 20 points in a game. Her previous career-high was 19, against RPI earlier this season.
  • With her four 3-pointers, Marchese is one shy of reaching 100 for her career.
  • She would become the ninth player in school history to reach the milestone, and her 99 trifectas are tied with Catherine Brady '05 on the all-time list.

  • Brandeis will play host to #25 Babson at 5:30 on the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving.
  • Tufts is off until after Turkey Day, taking on the University of New England on Sunday, November 27th at 1 p.m.
