Athletes of the Week for January 14, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Hillary Hellmann — Case Western Reserve University  —  Lakeside Park, KY (Notre Dame Academy)

Senior guard/forward Hillary Hellmann averaged 19.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and one block per game in a 3-0 week for Case Western Reserve University. She opened the week with 24 points and 12 rebounds in an 80-62 win over Chatham University, and her 23 points and nine boards on Sunday led the Spartans to a 67-64 victory over Brandeis University. Hellmann shot 40.7 percent from the floor and 32.0 percent from three-point range.

Men’s Basketball

Matt Davet — Emory University  —  University Heights, OH (St. Ignatius)

Emory University sophomore forward Matt Davet averaged 26.0 points and 8.0 rebounds as the Eagles split road games on their Midwest swing. He scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half of the Eagles’ 108-98 win over Washington University. On Sunday, Davet netted a career-high 27 points in a 96-86 overtime loss to University of Chicago. For the weekend, he shot 53.3 percent from the floor, 46.2 percent from three-point range, and 87.5 percent from the free throw line.

Cole Schmitz — University of Chicago  —  Madison, WI (Verona)

University of Chicago junior guard Cole Schmitz shot 64.0 percent from the floor, while averaging 19.5 points and 8.0 rebounds as the Maroons moved to 3-0 with home wins over 12th-ranked University of Rochester and Emory University. He hit seven of eight field goals and scored 16 points as the Maroons finished the game on a 15-5 run to defeat the Yellowjackets, 85-80. Schmitz posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 96-86 overtime victory over the Eagles.

Women’s Fencing

Madeleine Vibert — Brandeis University  —  Las Vegas, NV (West Career and Tech Academy)

Sophomore Madeleine Vibert finished 12-9 in the epee as Brandeis University finished 3-5 at the Western Invitational hosted by the United States Air Force Academy. She posted a 3-0 record against University of Florida and added 2-1 marks against University of the Incarnate Word and Stanford University.

Men’s Fencing

Leon Rotenstein — Brandeis University  —  Ashland, MA (Ashland)

Brandeis University senior Leon Rotenstein posted a 10-2 record in the sabre at the Western Invitational hosted by the United States Air Force Academy. He finished 3-0 against University of the Incarnate Word and University of California-San Diego, and earned a pair of wins against Stanford University and Air Force.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Lucy Daro — Emory University  —  Mill Valley, CA (San Francisco University)

Sophomore Lucy Daro contributed to four event victories as Emory University defeated NCAA Division II Florida Southern College. She won the 50-yard freestyle (25.06) and 100-yard butterfly (58.72 seconds) and swam on the winning 400-yard medley (4:00.21) and 200-yard freestyle (1:38.46) relays.

Elizabeth Davidson — Washington University  —  West Des Moines, IA (Valley)

Washington University sophomore Elizabeth Davidson swept the diving events in the Bears’ 127-55 win over Lindenwood University on Friday. She posted scored of 202.00 on the one-meter board and 212.20 in the three-meter event.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Thomas Gordon — Emory University  —  Raleigh, NC (Enloe)

In his first meet back from injury, Emory University senior Thomas Gordon posted a pair of top-two finishes in the Eagles’ dual meet against Florida Southern College. He won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:38.75 and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.20.

Nick Lemieux — NYU  —  Eagan, MN (Eagen)

Junior Nick Lemieux earned a first- and second-place finish in the diving events in a 149-94 NYU win over United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday. He won the one-meter board with a score of 282.52 and placed second in the three-meter event with a score of 247.13.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Senior Emily Bryson of Brandeis University ran the third-fastest NCAA Division III time in the 3,000-meter run this season at the Judges’ Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational. Competing in the event for the first time this year, she recorded a time of 9:56.97.

Eka Jose — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Sophomore Eka Jose won two events to help lead Washington University to a first-place finish at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Friday Night Spikes Opener. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.61 meters, the third-best in NCAA Division III this season in an event in which she already holds the top distance, and she captured the 60-meter dash in 8.15 seconds.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci — Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University junior Nick Matteucci ran to a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the Friday Night Spikes Opener hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His time of 8:28.04 ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.

Brett Henshey — Emory University  —  West Grove, PA (Salesianum)

Emory University freshman Brett Henshey finished third in the high jump at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Vulcan Invitational on Saturday. His mark of 2.00 meters ranks tied for seventh in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Will Crisco — NYU  —  Madison, CT (Wyoming Seminary Prep, PA)

NYU senior Will Crisco won all three of his bouts as 19th-ranked NYU swept four matches at the Mid-Winter Duals in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Among his wins, the 133-pounder recorded a 3-2 decision over his third-ranked opponent from McDaniel College.

Kyle Peisker — University of Chicago  —  Elk Grove, IL (Conant)

University of Chicago junior Kyle Peisker won the 174-pound title with a 5-0 record at the Elmhurst College Invitational, leading the Maroons to a third-place finish in the 12-team tournament. He tallied one pin, one technical fall, and captured the final by major decision to improve his season record to 22-3.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
