Athletes of the Week for January 22, 2018
Women’s Basketball
Kaitlyn Read — NYU — University Park, TX (Highland Park)
NYU graduate student Kaitlyn Read averaged 29.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 7.0 steals, and 4.0 assists per game in two home losses. She netted 21 points, hitting all eight of her free throws, while adding four rebounds, six assists, and four steals in the Violets’ 69-64 loss to Emory University. On Sunday, Read scored a career-high 37 points, including 23 after halftime, and recorded a career-high 10 assists in the Violets’ 83-79 overtime loss to seventh-ranked University of Rochester. She shot 48.7 percent from the floor (19-of-39) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (6-for-12) in the two contests.
Lauren Deming — University of Rochester — Waterloo, NY (Waterloo)
University of Rochester senior forward Lauren Deming averaged 25.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, shooting 64.3 percent from the field (18-for-28), as the Yellowjackets remained unbeaten in UAA play with a pair of road victories. She tallied 15 points and eight rebounds in a 68-61 win over Brandeis University on Friday. Deming scored a career-high 35 points, the most by a Rochester player since 1984, as the Yellowjackets rallied for an 83-79 overtime win over NYU. She scored 10 points in the final 1:50 of the regulation and overtime. Deming shot 50.0 percent from three-point range (6-for-12) for the weekend.
Men’s Basketball
Jack Nolan — Washington University — Downers Grove, IL (Benet Academy)
Washington University freshman guard Jack Nolan averaged 15.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in two wins, while playing a total of 36 minutes. He shot 61.1 percent from the floor (11-for-18) and 70.0 percent from three-point range (7-of-10) in the two games. Nolan scored 15 points in the Bears’ 100-64 win at Case Western Reserve University on Friday and netted 16 points in a 104-70 victory at Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday.
Women’s Fencing
Tiffany Luong — NYU — Newton, MA (Newton North)
First-year foilist Tiffany Luong posted a 20-8 mark in the weapon as NYU split 10 matches at the Philadelphia Invitational over the weekend. She registered 3-0 marks against Fairleigh Dickinson University, Brown University, St. John’s University, and Wayne State University. Luong finished 2-0 against Northwestern University and Haverford College.
Men’s Fencing
Mickey Bak — NYU — Linden, NJ (Academy for Information Technology)
Junior Mickey Bak posted a 23-5 record in the sabre to help lead NYU to an 8-4 record at the two-day Philadelphia Invitational. He finished 3-0 against New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, and Columbia University. Bak added 2-0 marks against Brown University and Wayne State University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Nicole Zanolli — Washington University — Menlo Park, CA (Menlo-Atherton)
Senior Nicole Zanolli earned two first-place finishes to help Washington University edge 20th-ranked NCAA Division II Truman State University on Saturday. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.68) and 200-yard backstroke (2:09.19). Zanolli added a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.35) and swam on the Bears’ runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.64).
Natalie DeMuro — University of Chicago — Wilson, WY (Deerfield Academy)
Senior Natalie DeMuro recorded NCAA Division III Diving regional qualifying scores on both boards against NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She won the one-meter dive (258.38) and placed third on the three-meter board (268.65).
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Brandon Lum — Washington University — Ventura, CA (Ventura)
Washington University junior Brandon Lum provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship in the 200-yard butterfly against NCAA Division II Truman State University. His time of 1:49.77 won the event. Lum teamed with Peyton Wilson, Simon Deshusses, and Chase Van Patten to take the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.13).
Connor Brisson — NYU — Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)
Senior Connor Brisson swept the diving events at a pair of NYU meets over the weekend. He posted scores of 405.90 on the one-meter board and 359.35 in the three-meter event in Friday’s competition against Williams College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In Saturday’s dual meet against West Chester University, Brisson won the one-meter board with a score of 306.83 and the three-meter event with a mark of 343.79.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
Annalise Wagner — Washington University — Webster Groves, MO (John Burroughs)
Senior Annalise Wagner posted the top NCAA Division III time this season in the 800-meter run at the I-55 Triangular Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday. She posted a time of 2:15.80 and also ran on the Bears’ winning 1,600-meter relay (4:04.38).
Elise Chao — Washington University — Naperville, IL (Naperville North)
First-year performer Elise Chao won the triple jump at the I-55 Triangular Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday. Her leap of 11.43 meters ranks second in NCAA Division III this season. Chao added a seventh-place finish in the long jump (5.25 meters).
Men’s Indoor Track and Field
Max Brown — Emory University — Warren Hills, NJ (Watchung Hills)
Emory University senior Max Brown placed second in the mile (4:13.48) and sixth in the 800-meter run (1:57.81) at the Eagles’ Crossplex Invitational. His time in the mile ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.
Tommy Mansfield — Carnegie Mellon University — Westerville, OH (Westerville Central)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Tommy Mansfield won the pole vault to help the Tartans take the title at their own 12-team invitational at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. His mark of 4.58 meters broke his own school record and ranks 18th in NCAA Division III this season.
Wrestling
Andrew Hoover — Case Western Reserve University — Colbert, WA (Mt. Spokane)
Case Western Reserve University sophomore 141-pounder Andrew Hoover went undefeated and helped lead the Spartans to a 3-1 record. He finished 4-0, including two pins and one technical fall. Hoover claimed a technical fall over his opponent in the Spartans’ 24-19 win over Adrian College on Wednesday. He added three victories on Saturday, including pins in wins over his opponents from Penn State-Behrend College and host Kent State University-Tuscarawas.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
