Athletes of the Week for February 18, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Taylor Lake — University of Chicago  —  Mars, PA (North Allegheny)

University of Chicago junior forward Taylor Lake hit 12 of 13 field goals and netted a career-high 30 points in the Maroons’ 85-68 win over visiting Brandeis University on Friday. She hit all five of her 3-point attempts and added four assists. Lake posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 68-48 victory over NYU on Sunday. For the weekend, she shot 68.2 percent from the floor (15-for-22), 83.3 percent from three-point range (5-of-6), and 71.4 percent from the free throw line (5-for-7).

Men’s Basketball

Lawrence Rowley — Emory University  —  Ypsilanti, MI (Ann Arbor Huron)

Emory University sophomore forward Lawrence Rowley averaged 18.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game as the Eagles earned road wins over Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University. He registered a double-double with 17 points, 15 boards, and five blocks in an 83-71 win over the Spartans on Friday and followed that with 19 points and nine rebounds in an 89-74 triumph over the Tartans on Sunday. For the weekend, Rowley shot 68.4 percent from the floor (13-for-19).

Women’s Fencing

Allison Dunlap — NYU  —  Redondo Beach, CA (Vistamar)

In her debut with the team, first-year fencer Allison Dunlap finished 8-1 in the sabre in a 2-1 week for NYU. She won two of three bouts in the Violets’ loss to host Columbia University on Wednesday and won all three of her matches in wins over Sacred Heart University and Vassar College.

Men’s Fencing

Zachary Schindler — NYU  —  Cambridge, MA (Buckingham Browne & Nichols)

Sophomore Zachary Schindler finished 7-1 in the sabre as NYU defeated two of its three opponents in a meet at Columbia University on Wednesday. He split two matches in the Violets’ loss to the host Lions, while posting a 3-0 mark against his opponents in wins over Sacred Heart University and Vassar College.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Fiona Muir — Emory University  —  Great Falls, VA (Langley)

Emory University senior Fiona Muir was named UAA Swimmer of the Year as the Eagles captured their 21st consecutive UAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship title. She became the first woman in Association history to win the 100-yard freestyle for four consecutive years, breaking the UAA record with a time of 50.12 seconds. She broke the 200-yard freestyle record with a winning time of 1:48.70 and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.44 seconds). Muir also swam on four winning relays.

Agnes Lo — University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

University of Chicago junior Agnes Lo was named UAA Diver of the Year after sweeping both boards at the UAA Swimming and Diving Championship. She broke the UAA record by more than 40 points and also set program and pool marks in the three-meter event with 551.45 points. Lo broke her own UAA mark as well as program and pool records with a score of 529.60 on the one-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Kevin Van Cleave — Washington University  —  Elm Grove, WI (Brookfield Academy)

Washington University senior Kevin Van Cleave was named UAA Swimmer of the Year after earning three individual titles at the UAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. He won the 100-yard breaststroke (55.32 seconds), 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.49), and 200 individual medley (1:48.32). The Bears placed second to 21-time champion Emory University.

Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Freshman Lucas Bumgarner became the first Emory University male to be named Diver of the Year at the UAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. He set a program record with a winning score of 576.15 on the three-meter board and finished second in the one-meter event with a career-best score of 512.60. The Eagles won their 21st consecutive UAA men’s title.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Running at the Fast Track Last Chance Meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York, Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson lowered her own program record in the mile. Competing against runners from all three divisions, she won the race in 4:45.58, besting her previous mark by 1.10 seconds and running the fifth-fastest time in NCAA Division III women’s history.

Julia Dannenbaum — Washington University  —  Summit, NJ (The Pingry School)

Sophomore Julia Dannenbaum of Washington University earned the top pole vault mark in NCAA Division III this season at the Illinois College Hilltop Invitational on Friday. She posted her personal best and the second-best in program history with a mark of 3.91 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Eddie Wintergalen — Washington University  —  Phoenix, AZ (Brophy College Preparatory)

Washington University senior Eddie Wintergalen led the Bears to two relay titles at the Illinois College Hilltop Invitational. He joined Arthur Santoro, Andrew Whitaker, and John Harry Wagner to break the program record and post the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:18.48 (converted time 3:14.33). Wintergalen combined with Alex Cobin, Wagner, and Nick Matteucci to record the fourth-fastest time in Division III this year with a time of 10:00.79 in the distance medley relay.

Justin Kiefel — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Downingtown, PA (Downingtown STEM Academy)

Carnegie Mellon University freshman Justin Kiefel improved his season-best triple jump distance at the Ohio State University Tune-Up. His leap of 14.37 meters ranks 11th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Liam Drury — NYU  —  Hinsdale, IL (Hinsdale Central)

Freshman Liam Drury of NYU was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Northeast/Mideast Regional Futures Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College on Saturday. He won all four of his bouts by decision to claim the 157-pound championship at the event.

Baseball

Jack Rubenstein — Emory University  —  Atlanta, GA (Pace Academy)

Emory University sophomore Jack Rubenstein batted .455 (5-for-11) with three runs, a double, one run batted in, and three stolen bases. He recorded multi-hit games in Eagles’ victories over LaGrange College and Whitworth University, including the first three-hit game of his career.

Jack Brodsky — Emory University  —  Woodcliff Lake, NJ (Pascack Hills)

Emory University freshman Jack Brodsky earned two wins in relief as the Eagles opened the season with a 2-1 record. He pitched a total of 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters. Brodsky tossed a scoreless ninth inning in a 2-1 win over LaGrange College and 2.2 scoreless innings in a 12-7 victory over Whitworth University.

Softball

Marley Felder — Brandeis University  —  Miami, FL (American Heritage)

First-year third baseman Marley Felder batted .500 (7-for-14) with six runs scored, a double, a triple, and five runs batted in as Brandeis University opened the season with four wins. She recorded two hits and three RBI in her collegiate debut, an 8-0 Judges’ win over Southern Virginia University. Felder contributed three hits and two runs scored in a 14-6 victory over Frostburg State University and added two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Salem State University.

Scottie Todd — Brandeis University  —  Tampa, FL (Strawberry Crest)

Junior pitcher Scottie Todd earned two wins on the mound, while also batting .455 (5-for-11) with three runs scored, two home runs, and five runs batted in as Brandeis University started the season 4-0. She homered twice and yielded six hits over six innings in the Judges’ 14-6 win over Frostburg State University. Todd earned another victory with three shutout innings of one-hit relief in a 5-3 Judges’ win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Salem State University.

Women’s Tennis

Camila Garcia — University of Rochester  —  San Diego, CA (Scripps Ranch)

Senior Camila Garcia finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles as University of Rochester opened the season with a pair of wins over local rivals. She teamed with Abbey Reinhart for an 8-7 (7-4) win at No. 1 doubles and earned a straight-set win at first singles as the Yellowjackets handed Rochester Institute of Technology its first loss, 5-4. Garcia and Reinhart posted an 8-0 doubles win and Garcia won in straight sets at first singles again in an 8-1 triumph over Nazareth College.

Men’s Tennis

Jonathan Jemison — Emory University  —  Marietta, GA (Lassiter)

Senior Jonathan Jemison posted a combined 4-1 record, including a pair of wins over Gwinnett College, the top-ranked team in NAIA, in a 2-1 week for Emory University. He teamed with classmate Adrien Bouchet for three wins at first doubles, including an 8-6 decision over Georgia Gwinnett, and then dropped just four games at No. 1 singles.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
