Athletes of the Week for February 12, 2018
Women’s Basketball
Kaitlyn Read — NYU — University Park, TX (Highland Park)
Graduate student Kaitlyn Read of NYU averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game as the Violets split home UAA contests with University of Chicago and Washington University. She scored 12 of her 25 points in the final five minutes, including the game-tying layup with three seconds remaining in regulation, as NYU upset the Bears, 82-79 in overtime on Sunday. Read added seven boards and five assists in the game.
Alexandra Leslie — University of Rochester — Lancaster, PA (Manheim Township)
Senior forward Alexandra Leslie averaged 22.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, playing just 23.5 minutes per game, to lead University of Rochester to road wins over Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University. Her 45 points in two games lifted her career total to 1,758, moving her into second place all-time in Yellowjacket history. Leslie shot 65.5 percent (19-for-29) from the field and connected on two of three 3-pointers in the two games.
Men’s Basketball
Collin Barthel — University of Chicago — Indianapolis, IN (Cathedral)
Senior forward Collin Barthel averaged 25.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game as University of Chicago split two UAA road contests. He netted a career-high 37 points, hitting 12 of 18 field goals and all three 3-pointers, in the Maroons’ 75-66 victory at NYU on Friday. Barthel followed that with 14 points, 12 boards, four assists, and three steals in a 70-66 loss to Brandeis University on Sunday. For the weekend, he shot 59.4 percent from the field (19-for-32) and 90.9 percent from the line (10-of-11).
Andrew Sanders — Washington University — Tampa, FL (Henry B. Plant)
Senior forward Andrew Sanders averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as second-ranked Washington University remained unbeaten in UAA play with road wins at Brandeis University and NYU. He scored 24 points on 12 of 17 shooting from the field in Friday’s 87-75 Bears’ win over the Judges. On Sunday, Sanders contributed 23 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in a 99-72 win over the Violets. For the weekend, he shot 70.4 percent from the field (19-for-27).
Women’s Fencing
Liz Feller — Brandeis University — Cortlandt Manor, NY (Hendrick Hudson)
Brandeis University senior Liz Feller posted an 8-3 record at the Duke University Invitational. She finished 7-2 in the epee in the squad’s first three matches and added a win in the sabre in the final match. Feller finished 3-0 against seventh-ranked Temple University with 2-1 marks against two more top-10 teams, Penn State University, and host Duke.
Men’s Fencing
Eli Litle — Brandeis University — Haifa, Israel (Reali-Beit Biram)
Brandeis University senior Eli Litle posted an 8-3 record at the Duke University Invitational. He won all three of his bouts to lead the Judges’ foil squad to a 5-4 win over Penn State University. Litle finished 2-0 against Johns Hopkins University and 2-1 versus University of North Carolina.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Carmen White — NYU — Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)
NYU sophomore Carmen White swept the diving events at the Violets’ home invitational, posting the top score in NCAA Division III this season in each. She captured the one-meter board with a mark of 512.03 and then scored 561.01 in the three-meter event.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Ariel Okhtenberg — NYU — Staten Island, NY (Staten Island Tech)
NYU junior Ariel Okhtenberg won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at the Violets’ home invitational. He recorded a time of 46.04 seconds in the 100 free and 1:40.92 in the 200 free.
Connor Brisson — NYU — Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)
NYU senior Connor Brisson swept the diving events at the Violets’ home invitational, posting the top score in NCAA Division III this season in each. He captured the one-meter dive with a mark of 628.97 and followed that with a score of 636.60 on the three-meter board.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University — Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Brandeis University junior Emily Bryson ran the fastest mile in NCAA Division III this season and sixth-fastest time in Division III indoor season history on Friday at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Her time of 4:46.63 is five seconds faster than any other mile time this season. Bryson teamed with her sister Julia, and sisters Lisbeth and Leinni Valdez to record the 10th-fastest NCAA Division III distance medley relay time this season (11:57.84).
Cassandra Laios — Case Western Reserve University — Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)
Case Western Reserve University senior Cassandra Laios broke her own school record in winning the weight throw title at the All-Ohio Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her throw of 17.92 meters topped her previous best toss of 17.62 meters and ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season. Laois placed second in the shot put with a throw of 13.26 meters.
Men’s Indoor Track and Field
Irie Gourde — Brandeis University — Portland, OR (York Academy, Toronto)
Graduate student Irie Gourde of Brandeis University ran the fastest NCAA Division III 400-meter dash time this season at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday. His time of 47.81 seconds is the only sub-48 second time this season. Gourde also moved up to 13th in Division III this year with a time of 21.87 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Tommy Mansfield — Carnegie Mellon University — Westerville, OH (Westerville Central)
Senior Tommy Mansfield broke his own Carnegie Mellon University record in the pole vault at the Tiffin University Dragon Grand Prix on Saturday. He cleared 4.60 meters, which ranks 24th in NCAA Division III this season.
Wrestling
Raymond Jazikoff — NYU — South Plainfield, NJ (South Plainfield)
NYU senior Raymond Jazikoff won his second consecutive Most Outstanding Wrestler honor at the UAA Wrestling Championship hosted by University of Chicago on Saturday. He recorded wins in both his bouts at 157 pounds to improve to 41-5 this season and become the program’s all-time wins leader with 142.
Baseball
Christopher Stern — Emory University — Bedford, NY (Fox Lane)
Sophomore Christopher Stern hit .444 (4-for-9) with a triple and three runs batted in as Emory University finished 1-2 against 10th-ranked LaGrange College and Covenant College. He finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in the Eagles’ 10-4 win over the Scots on Friday. Stern has opened the season batting .632 with a five-game hitting streak.
Christian Bradley — Emory University — Atlanta, GA (Westminster School)
Freshman right-handed pitcher Christian Bradley tossed four scoreless innings and earned his first career win for Emory University. He tossed a perfect three innings in relief with three strikeouts to help the Eagles salvage a split with Covenant College. Bradley has not allowed a run in 4.1 innings, striking out five with no walks.
Softball
Sarah Flanders — Emory University — Peachtree City, GA (Starr’s Mill)
Emory University junior centerfielder Sarah Flanders finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored and one run batted in as the Eagles opened the season with a split against Birmingham-Southern College. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a 5-0 triumph over the Panthers.
Toko Miller — Emory University — Prescott, AZ (Prescott)
Emory University junior Toko Miller tossed a complete-game shutout to give the Eagles a split with Birmingham-Southern College to open the 2018 season. She allowed just three hits and stuck out five in a 5-0 Eagles’ victory, setting down the final nine batters to earn her second career shutout.
Women’s Tennis
Claire Handa — University of Chicago — Rockville Centre, NY (Friends Academy)
First-year player Claire Handa won all six of her combined singles and doubles matches as University of Chicago finished 3-0 on a weekend trip to Ohio. She did not drop a set and lost a total of just eight games in her three wins at No. 2 singles. Handa teamed with sophomore Marjorie Antohi for three victories at first doubles, including a 9-8 (7-4) win in the Maroons’ 6-3 win over UAA rival Case Western Reserve University.
Men’s Tennis
Nicolas Chua — University of Chicago — San Carlos, CA (Bellarmine College Preparatory)
University of Chicago senior Nicolas Chua won all five of his combined singles and doubles matches as the Maroons finished 3-0 on a weekend trip to Ohio. He earned a pair of three-set wins at first singles, including a 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 10-8 victory in the Maroons’ 8-1 victory over UAA rival Case Western Reserve University. Chua teamed with sophomore Ninan Kumar to sweep three matches at No. 1 doubles.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
