Athletes of the Week for March 4, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Madeline Homoly — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Bishop Miege)

Washington University senior forward Madeline Homoly averaged a double-double as the Bears won a pair of games to advance to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. Over the two games, she averaged 21.0 points and 11.0 rebounds, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor (17-for-35). Homoly netted 23 points in an 86-78 Bears’ victory over eighth-ranked George Fox University in the second round.

Men’s Basketball

Brendan O’Shea — University of Rochester  —  Burlington,  VT (St. Johnsbury/Hotchkiss School, CT)

University of Rochester senior forward Brendan O’Shea averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game as the Yellowjackets finished their season in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. He shot 64.7 percent (11-for-17) from the field, hit five 3-pointers, and made all six of his free throw attempts. O’Shea recorded back-to-back steals and made breakaway layups to seal the Yellowjackets’ 85-68 first-round victory over State University of New York at Farmingdale.

Women’s Fencing

Jada Harrison — Brandeis University  —  Jericho, NY (Jericho)

First-year fencer Jada Harrison of Brandeis University captured the women’s sabre title at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championships. The Judges finished second in the women’s standings and Brandeis finished first in the six-weapon combined standings for men and women.

Men’s Fencing

Alexander Holtmann — Brandeis University  —  Bad Ueberkingen, Germany (Kaufmaennische Schule Geislingen)

Brandeis University sophomore Alexander Holtmann won three titles at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championships. He won the individual title and was part of the men’s sabre squad title and the Judges’ overall six-weapon squad championship. Brandeis finished second in the three-weapon men’s standings.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Agnes Lo — University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

Junior Agnes Lo of University of Chicago swept the diving events at the NCAA Division III regional championship hosted by Wabash College. She won the one-meter event with a score of 444.20 points and the three-meter board with a mark of 477.25 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Freshman Lucas Bumgarner of Emory University secured first- and second-place showings at the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships to earn a berth to the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. He scored a career-high 518.95 points to win the one-meter dive before finishing second on the three-meter board with a score of 526.80.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Julia Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Leinni Valdez — Brandeis University  —  Providence, RI (Hope)
Doyin Ogundiran — Brandeis University  —  Dix Hills, NY (Half Hollow Hills East)
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

The Brandeis University distance medley relay team of Julia Bryson, Leinni Valdez, Doyin Ogundiran, and Emily Bryson ran the fastest NCAA Division III time this season at the Tufts University National Qualifying Meet. Their time of 11:41.98 set the program record and earned them the top seed into this weekend’s NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Heidi Nassos — Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University senior Heidi Nassos took first place in the pole vault at the Wartburg College Qualifier. She won the event with a height of 3.91 meters. Nassos owns the top mark in NCAA Division III this season at 3.93 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jason Singer — Washington University  —  Darlington, WI (Darlington)
Eddie Wintergalen — Washington University  —  Phoenix, AZ (Brophy College Preparatory)
Andrew Whitaker — Washington University  —  West Chester, OH (Lakota West)
John Harry Wagner  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

The Washington University 1,600-meter relay team of Jason Singer, Eddie Wintergalen, Andrew Whitaker, and John Harry Wagner shattered their own program record set less than a month ago. The quartet ran to a first-place finish at the Wartburg College Qualifier and shaved more than two seconds off the record with a time o 3:16.27, which is the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.

Dominic Oddo — Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Case Western Reserve University junior Dominic Oddo set a program record in the heptathlon at the Polar Bear Final Qualifier at Ohio Northern University. His score of 4,709 points broke the previous mark by 94 points and earned him a spot in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend in Boston.

Baseball

Jackson Grayson — Emory University  —  Los Angeles, CA (Harvard-Westlake)

Emory University senior Jackson Grayson finished 6-for-9 with four runs scored and three runs batted in as the Eagles won two of three games. His two-run single in the eighth inning keyed the Eagles’ 5-3 win over 24th-ranked Berry College on Tuesday and he added four hits in a split with Roanoke College on Saturday.

John Howard — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Clayton)

Washington University senior right-handed pitcher John Howard yielded four hits and no earned runs in a 6-2 win over University of Dubuque, which reached the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship last season. He allowed only two hits after the opening inning and struck out eight batters.

Women’s Golf

Julia Dai — Washington University  —  Bellevue, WA (Bellevue)

First-year golfer Julia Dai of Washington University tied for 10th place at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. She shot a five-over par 78 to finished just three strokes off the lead, parring 13 holes.

Softball

Cassie Baca — Emory University  —  Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

Senior shortstop Cassie Baca batted .556 (5-for-9) with six runs scored and four runs batted in as Emory University took two of three games in a weekend series with DePauw University. She recorded three doubles and a triple, posting a 1.111 slugging percentage and .583 on-base percentage. Baca finished
3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the Eagles’ 9-5 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Women’s Tennis

Emma Cartledge — Emory University  —  Roanoke, VA (North Cross School)

First-year player Emma Cartledge finished a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles to help lead Emory University to its third consecutive Oracle ITA Division III National Women’s Team Indoor Championship title. She won all three of her singles matches in straight sets at No. 4 singles and teamed with senior Daniela Lopez for three wins at second doubles. Cartledge clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win on Sunday to give the Eagles a 5-3 victory over top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Men’s Tennis

Anupreeth Coramutla —  Brandeis University  —  Monroe Township, NJ (Phillips Andover, MA)

Sophomore Anupreeth Coramutla finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead 10th-ranked Brandeis University to wins over NCAA Division I Bryant University and 23rd-ranked Bates College. He teamed with David Aizenberg for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles and earned two victories at second singles. Coramutla clinched the win over Bates with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
