Athletes of the Week for March 19, 2018
Baseball
Rocco Maue — Case Western Reserve University — Moon Township, PA (Moon Area)
Junior second baseman Rocco Maue batted .450 (9-for-20) with five home runs and 11 runs batted in to lead Case Western Reserve University to a 5-0 record to complete a spring break road trip undefeated. He scored seven runs, walked three times, recorded a .542 on-base percentage, and a 1.200 slugging percentage. Maue homered three times and drove in eight runs in a 12-1 Spartans’ victory over Roger Williams University on Wednesday. He hit safely in all five contests.
Nick Chambers — Emory University — Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Senior Nick Chambers recorded multiple hits in each game in a 4-0 week for Emory University, batting .611 (11-for-18). He totaled six runs scored, three doubles, two walks, and two stolen bases. Chambers recorded a .650 on-base percentage and .778 slugging percentage. He finished 6-for-9 with four runs scored and four RBI in a pair of Eagle wins over Middlebury College.
Ryan Loutos — Washington University — Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Loutos posted a 2-0 record with a 0.60 earned run average and 21 strikeouts in two starts for Washington University. He yielded one run and five hits without a walk, striking out 10, in the Bears’ 15-2 win over State University of New York at Oswego on Monday. Loutos came back on Sunday to throw eight innings of seven-hit ball with 11 strikeouts in a 9-4 victory over Coe College. He did not walk a batter or give up an earned run.
Women’s Golf
Alyssa Poentis — NYU — Honolulu, HI (Punahou)
NYU senior Alyssa Poentis led the Violets to their third consecutive UAA Women’s Golf Championship title, earning Most Valuable Player honors. She finished first individually with rounds of 79 and 74 for a 153 total. Poentis earned a 14th-place finish in the 120-player field at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational last weekend with a three-round score of 230 (76-77-77) as the Violets placed second in the 20-team field.
Gigi Garcia — Washington University — Davie, FL (Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy)
Washington University first-year player Gigi Garcia finished tied for fifth and earned all-tournament honors at the 120-player Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. She totaled a three-round score of 226 (75-75-76) and tied for second in the field in pars made.
Men’s Golf
Matt Organisak — Emory University — Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)
Emory University sophomore Matt Organisak earned all-tournament honors at the UAA Men’s Golf Championship and led the Eagles at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. He won both his match play contests to help lead Emory to its third consecutive UAA title. Organisak then placed 11th of 150 golfers with a 54-hole score of 214 (71-71-72) as the sixth-ranked Eagles finished tied for fourth at the 30-team event.
Softball
Maren Waldner — Case Western Reserve University — Redondo Beach, CA (Chadwick School)
Senior Maren Waldner batted .613 (19-for-31) with 11 runs scored and eight runs batted in to help lead Case Western Reserve University to a 7-1 record on its spring break trip. She hit safely in all eight games with six multi-hit efforts, hit five doubles, and registered a .636 on-base percentage and .774 slugging percentage. Waldner ended the week hitting 4-for-5 with four runs scored in a 13-2 Spartans’ win over Gustavus Adolphus College.
Diana King — NYU — Rye, NY (Rye Neck)
Junior outfielder Diana King hit .552 (16-for-29) with nine runs scored, six doubles, two triples, and 13 runs batted in over eight games for NYU. She recorded at least one hit in every game with five multi-hit efforts. King finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a program single-game record seven RBI in the Violets’ 20-11 extra inning win over Wisconsin Lutheran College. She posted a .606 on-base percentage and .897 slugging percentage.
Sidney Brannam — Case Western Reserve University — Austin, TX (St. Dominic Savio Catholic)
First-year pitcher Sidney Brannam posted a 4-1 mark with a 1.88 earned run average as Case Western Reserve University won seven of eight games on its spring break trip. In 26 innings, she allowed just 19 hits and struck out 17 batters, tossing complete game victories against Stevens Institute of Technology and Gustavus Adolphus College. Brannan allowed two hits and no runs in five innings against Macalester College and six innings versus Rochester Institute of Technology.
Women’s Tennis
Katie Lai — Carnegie Mellon University — Hagatna, Guam (St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, MD)
Senior Katie Lai won both her singles and doubles matches as Carnegie Mellon University split matches against nationally ranked opponents. She sealed the Tartans’ 7-2 win over fifth-ranked Bowdoin College with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles after teaming with junior Jamie Vizelman for a 9-8 (7-3) victory at third doubles. Lai was part of both Tartan points in a loss to 11th-ranked Amherst College, including a straight-set win in singles.
Men’s Tennis
Bernardo Neves — Washington University — Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Colégio pH)
Sophomore Bernardo Neves recorded a 7-1 record, including a 4-0 mark in singles, as Washington University spit four matches against nationally ranked opponents. He played at second, third, and fourth singles and his play helped propel the Bears to a 6-3 win over 14th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and a 5-4 victory over fifth-ranked Wesleyan College. Neves teamed with junior Radha Vishnubhotla for three wins at No. 2 doubles.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Madeline Lindemann — Case Western Reserve University — Memphis, TN (Houston)
Case Western Reserve University sophomore Madeline Lindemann won the 10,000-meter run at the Washington & Lee University Carnival. She won the event with a time of 37:45.82, which ranked seventh in NCAA Division III in the opening weekend of the season.
Michelle Karabin — Carnegie Mellon University — Ruffs Dale, PA (Greensburg Central Catholic)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Michelle Karabin won the pole vault with a career-best effort at the Washington & Lee University Carnival. Her clearance of 3.65 meters was the second-best mark in the opening weekend of NCAA Division III competition.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Isaac Mills — Carnegie Mellon University — Fairfax, VA (Oakton)
Carnegie Mellon University junior Isaac Mills won the 800-meter run at the Washington & Lee University Carnival. His time of 1:54.60 ranked third in NCAA Division III in the first weekend of the 2018 season.
Jacob Schofel — Carnegie Mellon University — Livingston, NJ (Livingston)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Jacob Schofel won the hammer and placed fourth in the discus at the Washington & Lee University Carnival. His distance of 53.98 meters in the hammer ranked fifth in NCAA Division III in the opening weekend of the season.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
