Athletes of the Week for March 25, 2019

Women’s Fencing

Tiffany Luong — NYU  —  Newton, MA (Newton North)

NYU sophomore Tiffany Luong finished 22nd in the foil competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. She helped NYU place 17th, first among NCAA Division III programs, in the combined women’s and men’s standings.

Men’s Fencing

Mickey Bak — NYU  —  Linden, NJ (Academy for Information Technology)

NYU senior Mickey Bak finished 17th in the sabre competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. He helped NYU place 17th, first among NCAA Division III programs, in the combined men’s and women’s standings.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Fiona Muir  — Emory University  —  Great Falls, VA (Langley)

Senior Fiona Muir won three individual events and swam on two victorious relays to lead Emory University to its 10th consecutive NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship title. She won NCAA titles in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle events, adding national titles as a member of the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays. Muir closed out her career with 17 NCAA titles and 25 All-America honors.

Honore Collins — NYU  —  Evanston, IL (Evanston Township)

Junior Honore Collins of NYU was named NCAA Division III Women’s Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual events at the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship. She broke program records in winning the 200-yard butterfly, and 200- and 400-yard individual medley events. Her time of 1:58.18 in the 200 IM broke the NCAA Division III record. Collins helped lead the Violets to a program-best fifth-place finish.

Agnes Lo — University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

Junior Agnes Lo of University of Chicago earned a pair of All-America awards at the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship. She placed second in the three-meter dive with 486.35 points and third on the one-meter board (468.45).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Thomas Gordon  — Emory University  —  Raleigh, NC (Enloe)

Emory University senior Thomas Gordon won a pair of individual titles at the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. He defended his NCAA titles in the 500-yard freestyle (4:24.19) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:14.84). Gordon swam on the Eagles’ runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay (6:31.88) and helped lead Emory to a second-place team finish.

Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Freshman Lucas Bumgarner of Emory University earned All-America accolades in both diving events at the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. He earned a runner-up finish in the one-meter dive (515.75) before taking sixth place on the three-meter board. His second-place NCAA finish was the highest finish for an Emory men’s diver since 1990.

Baseball

Rocco Maue — Case Western Reserve University  —  Moon Township, PA (Moon Area)

Case Western Reserve University senior second baseman Rocco Maue batted .500 with three home runs and eight runs batted in as the Spartans swept a pair of doubleheaders. He added two triples, two walks, and two stolen bases, registering a 1.313 slugging percentage. Maue homered for the Spartans’ first run and then scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning of a 5-4 win over St. John Fisher College in the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He began the weekend with two triples and two home runs in a 19-0 blanking of State University of New York at Fredonia.

Matt Levine — Case Western Reserve University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Levine of Case Western Reserve University threw seven shutout innings in a 19-0 Spartans’ win over State University of New York at Fredonia. He allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out five, lowering his season earned run average to 1.02.

John Howard — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Clayton)

Washington University senior right-handed pitcher John Howard held Illinois Wesleyan University scoreless in eight innings of the Bears’ 6-0 victory. He yielded six hits, walked two, and struck out seven batters. After giving up back-to-back hits to start the game, Howard picked a runner off and struck out the final two batters of the inning.

Softball

Nicole Carty — Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsford, NY (Pittsford Sutherland)

Case Western Reserve University junior Nicole Carty batted .682 (15-for-22) with 10 runs scored and six runs batted in during a 5-1 week for the Spartans. She recorded five doubles, two home runs, and a 1.182 slugging percentage. Carty finished a combined 6-for-6 with five runs scored, a double, a home run, and two RBI in a doubleheader sweep of University of Mount Union on Sunday.

Maggie Swan — NYU  —  Annandale, NJ (North Hunterdon)

NYU first-year pitcher Maggie Swan posted a 2-0 record and 1.02 earned run average in three appearances. She allowed two earned runs in 13.2 innings, walking just one and striking out nine. Swan tossed her first complete game and fanned out six in an 8-3 Violets’ win over The College of New Jersey, avenging a pair of losses earlier in the week.

Women’s Tennis

Divya Sharma — Washington University  —  Charlotte, NC (Hilton Head Prep)

First-year player Divya Sharma of Washington University upset the 24th-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II in the Bears’ 5-4 loss to Drury University. She earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles.

Men’s Tennis

Adrien Bouchet —  Emory University  —  Oakton, VA (Oakton)

Senior Adrien Bouchet won a pair of singles matches to help lead Emory University to wins over University of California Santa Cruz and fifth-ranked Williams College. He recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles in the Eagles’ 7-2 win over the Banana Slugs on Saturday. Bouchet teamed with classmate Jonathan Jemison for an 8-6 win at first doubles, then earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles to key a
6-3 win over the Ephs on Sunday.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Dani Bland  — Emory University  —  Mountville, PA (Hempfield)

Senior Dani Bland of Emory University won the 100- and 200-meter dashes as the Eagles captured the title at their home invitational. Her time of 11.95 seconds in the 100 is the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season and her 24.78 finish in the 200 ranks second nationally.

Cassandra Laios  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Graduate student Cassandra Laios claimed titles in the hammer throw, shot put, and discus to help lead Case Western Reserve University to the title at the Amy Adams Memorial Invitational hosted by Muskingum University. She broke her own program record in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.48 meters, tops in NCAA Division III this season. Laios also broke the seven-year-old program record in the shot put with a distance of 13.29 meters and won the discus with a heave of 40.48 meters.

Isabel Saridakis  — Emory University  —  Richfield, OH (Walsh Jesuit)

Junior Isabel Saridakis broke her own record in the pole vault as the Eagles hosted the Emory Invitational last weekend. She won the event with a height of 3.75 meters, bettering her previous mark of 3.68 meters. Her new record holds the top spot in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

John Harry Wagner  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

Sophomore John Harry Wagner won the 200- and 400-meter dashes to help lead Washington University to the title at its season-opening home meet. He won the 400 with a time of 48.29 seconds, which ranks first in NCAA Division III this season, and captured the 200 in 21.86 seconds.

Bram Miller  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Sophomore Bram Miller won the shot put and finished second in the discus to help lead Carnegie Mellon University to the title at its home invitational. His winning toss of 15.58 meters in the shot put ranks third in NCAA Division III this season and his runner-up mark of 48.11 meters in the discus ranks fourth nationally.
 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
