Athletes of the Week for April 2, 2018
Baseball
Rocco Maue — Case Western Reserve University — Moon Township, PA (Moon Area)
Junior second baseman Rocco Maue hit .333 (5-for-15) with two doubles, three home runs, five runs scored, and three runs batted in to help lead Case Western Reserve University to three wins in a four-game series with visiting Emory University. He recorded three extra-base hits in the Spartans’ 12-6 win in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday and homered for the third time in as many games in the nightcap in a 4-3 Spartans’ victory. Maue recorded a 1.067 slugging percentage and .412 on-base percentage in the series.
Matt Levine — Case Western Reserve University — Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)
Freshman Matt Levine tossed a complete-game shutout to lead 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University to a 4-0 win over Emory University on Sunday. He surrendered just six hits and one walk, while striking out four. Levine allowed only one runner past second base and retired nine consecutive hitters between the sixth and ninth innings.
Men’s Golf
Stefano Butti — Emory University — Palm City, FL (Jensen Beach)
Emory University junior Stefano Butti placed fifth of 88 players at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate to help lead the Eagles to a third-place team finish in the 16-team field. He carded an opening round three-under par 69, tying the second-best performance of his career.
Matt Shen — NYU — Honolulu, HI (Punahou)
NYU sophomore Matt Shen tied for third place in a field of 84 golfers at the snow-shortened Hershey Cup. He recorded two birdies en route to a three-over par 74. The tournament was halted after the first round.
Softball
Taylor Arends — Washington University — River Forest, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)
Washington University junior shortstop Taylor Arends finished 4-for-4 with five runs scored, three extra-base hits, and four runs batted in as the Bears split a doubleheader with University of Chicago on Friday. She finished 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored, and one RBI in a 10-5 Bears’ loss in the first game and then hit 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI in a 9-0 five-inning win in the second game.
Jacqueline Spizizen — Emory University — Bloomfield, MI (Detroit Country Day)
Emory University first-year pitcher Jacqueline Spizizen registered a 3-0 record and earned a save in the Eagles’ four-game sweep of visiting Case Western Reserve University. In 14.1 innings, she allowed just one run and seven hits, posting a 0.49 earned run average with 11 strikeouts. Spizizen threw 11 shutout innings in her two starts, while also earning one win and one save in relief.
Women’s Tennis
Daniela Lopez — Emory University — Coral Gables, FL (Ransom Everglades)
Junior Daniela Lopez finished 2-0 at No. 3 singles and third doubles as top-ranked Emory University split a pair of matches against DePauw University and NCAA Division I Charleston Southern University. She won her singles matches in straight sets and teamed with first-year teammate Katie Chang for 8-3 and 8-2 victories in doubles.
Men’s Tennis
Sam Concannon — Case Western Reserve University — Indianapolis, IN (Culver Military Academy)
Case Western Reserve University sophomore Sam Concannon posted a combined 5-1 record in singles and doubles as the Spartans won two of three matches over the weekend. He teamed with freshman Matthew Chen for three wins at No. 3 doubles, not yielding more than five games in any match, including a win against seventh-ranked Amherst College. Concannon recorded victories at fourth singles in the Spartans’ wins over Haverford College and 21st-ranked Swarthmore College.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Dani Bland — Emory University — Mountville, PA (Hempfield)
Emory University junior Dani Bland ran two of the top sprint times and ran on the fastest relay in NCAA Division III this season at the Eagles’ home invitational. Her time of 24.66 seconds in the 200-meter dash ranks third in Division III this season and her time of 12.10 seconds in the 100-meter dash would also rank third if not for her faster time the previous week. Bland ran on the 1,600-meter relay that turned in the fastest time in Division III this season with a mark of 3:47.35.
Heidi Nassos — Washington University — Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)
Washington University junior Heidi Nassos helped lead the Bears to the team title at its own invitational with a first-place finish in the pole vault. She cleared a height of 3.60 meters, which ranks tied for seventh in NCAA Division III this season.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Nick Matteucci — Washington University — Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)
Washington University sophomore Nick Matteucci ran the fastest NCAA Division III time this season in the 1,500-meter run as the Bears tied for first place in their own invitational. He won the event in a time of 3:51.93 and placed third in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:55.27. The Bears entered the weekend unranked and shared the title with top-ranked North Central College.
Jacob Schofel — Carnegie Mellon University — Livingston, NJ (Livingston)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Jacob Schofel won two throwing events and placed second in another at the Tartans’ Annual Quad Meet on Saturday. He broke the program record in the discus with a heave of 47.55 meters, besting the previous record of 47.40 meters set in 2010. Schofel won the hammer throw with a toss of 55.82 meters and took second in the shot put with a distance of 13.67 meters. His marks currently rank seventh in NCAA Division III this season in the hammer and 11th in the discus.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
