Athletes of the Week for May 17, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Bo Anderson  —  Washington University  —  Wilmington, DE (Tower Hill)

Washington University junior Bo Anderson recorded three hits and scored a pair of runs in each game of the top-ranked Bears’ sweep of Wartburg College. He doubled in both games, finishing 6-for-9 with four runs scored, one run batted in, and a stolen base.

Baseball - Pitcher

Matt Levine  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)

Case Western Reserve University senior right-handed pitcher Matt Levine threw a complete game five-hitter, surrendering two unearned runs, as the Spartans earned a 7-2 victory in a doubleheader split with College of Wooster on Saturday. He walked two batters and struck out six in the third complete game of his career.

Women’s Golf

Alexis Sudijanto  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Latin School)

Sophomore Alexis Sudjianto placed second individually and helped lead Carnegie Mellon University to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship. She shot a 72-hole score of 305 (75-72-79-77) to place second in the 131-player field, and set a program record for lowest four-round score in the NCAA championship.

Men’s Golf

Jason Folker  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Senior Jason Folker placed seventh individually to help lead Carnegie Mellon University to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship. He carded a 72-hole score of seven-over par 290 (76-71-72-71) for his seventh-place finish in the 191-player field. Folker set program records for lowest four-round score and highest individual finish in the NCAA championship.

Softball - Hitter

Kela Jagoda  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Oswego, IL (Oswego)

First-year outfielder Kela Jagoda of Case Western Reserve University finished 5-for-6 with three runs scored and three runs batted in as the Spartans swept College of Wooster. She went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, and two RBI in an 11-8 victory in the opening game.

Greta Wilker  —  Emory University  —  Belding, MI (Belding)

Graduate student Greta Wilker finished 3-for-5 with five runs batted in to help lead Emory University to a sweep of 10th-ranked Berry College. She went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI in a 3-2 Eagles’ win in the opening game, and then finished 2-3 for a double and three RBI in a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Softball - Pitcher

Madison Schaefer  —  Emory University  —  Newton, MA (Newton North)

Senior pitcher Madison Schaefer earned a win and a save in an Emory University doubleheader sweep of 10th-ranked Berry College. She threw a complete game, scattering seven hits, walking one, and fanning four in the Eagles’ 3-2 victory in game one. Schaefer recorded the first save of her career with two scoreless innings, in which she struck out three batters, in a 4-1 win in game two.

Women’s Tennis

Ana Cristina Perez  —  Emory University  —  Santo Domingo, DR (Carol Morgan School)

Emory University first-year player Cristina Perez dropped just three games total in two singles matches as the Eagles advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals. She teamed with Lauren Yoon at No. 3 doubles to post 8-0 and 8-1 wins over Rhode Island College and Williams College, respectively. Perez earned her singles wins at the No. 4 spot, posting a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Ephs and 6-0, 6-1 versus the Anchormen.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore James Hopper led the Spartans to a pair of wins and its second berth in NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals in program history. He teamed with Matthew Chen at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 win and led 6-1, 5-1 at No. 1 singles when the Spartans clinched their 5-0 win over Illinois Institute of Technology. Facing NCAA doubles and singles qualifiers, he teamed with Chen for an 8-5 win in doubles and earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory in singles to blank Gustavus Adolphus College, 5-0.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Megan Girmscheid  —  Washington University  —  Grayslake, IL (Grayslake Central)

Washington University senior Megan Girmscheid captured the 10,000-meter run at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. Her time of 37:06.48 ranks 21st in NCAA Division III this season.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University senior Eka Jose earned runner-up finishes in the long jump and triple jump at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. She recorded a leap of 11.56 meters in the triple jump, an event in which she ranks sixth in NCAA Division III from an earlier performance this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Marcus-Jay Wilkes  —  Washington University  —  Mequon, WI (University School of Milwaukee)

Washington University sophomore Marcus-Jay Wilkes teamed with Andrew Whitaker, Alex Djetto, and John Harry Wagner to post the fastest 1,600-meter relay time in NCAA Division III this season at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. The relay squad finished in 3:10.82. Wilkes added a third-place finish in the 100 meters (10.79 seconds) and placed fourth in the 200 meters (21.73 seconds).

Matt Moore  —  Washington University  —  Waukee, IA (Dowling Catholic)

Washington University junior Matt Moore placed fourth in the long jump at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. He recorded a jump of 6.78 meters.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
