Athletes of the Week for May 20, 2019

Baseball

John Brinkman — Washington University  —  Worden, IL (St. Louis University HS)

Washington University junior John Brinkman recorded multiple hits in all five games of the NCAA Division III St. Louis Baseball Championship Regional, accumulating 12 hits with two doubles, a home run, and 10 runs batted in. He scored six runs and finished with a .480 batting average (12-for-25) and .680 slugging percentage as the Bears finished the season with a program record three wins in NCAA play.

Matt Levine — Case Western Reserve University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore right-hander Matt Levine threw a complete-game shutout in the Spartans’ 11-0 win over University of Rochester on Saturday during the NCAA Division III Wooster Baseball Championship Regional. He allowed just six hits and one walk, striking out five batters, and needing only 111 pitches in nine innings. Levine did not allow a batter past first base until the eighth inning.

Women’s Golf

Arshia Mahant — NYU  —  New Delhi, India (Modern School Vasant Vihar)

First-year player Arshia Mahant earned runner-up honors to lead NYU to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship title. She shot a four-round 297 (82-75-71-69) at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas, finishing one shot behind the individual champion. The Violets overcame an eight-stroke deficit heading into the final round to win their first NCAA title by five strokes. Mahant birdied five of the first 10 holes as NYU tied the tournament record with a final round score of 294.

Softball

Cassie Baca — Emory University  —  South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

Senior shortstop Cassie Baca was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division III Lynchburg Super Regional Championship, which saw the Eagles rally from a one-game deficit to advance to the championship round. She hit .583 (7-for-12) with three runs scored, two doubles, and seven runs batted in over three games. Baca finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Emory came back from a 6-1 deficit to win the deciding game, 10-8.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jay Pittman — Washington University  —  Detroit, MI (Wylie E. Groves)

Washington University senior Jay Pittman ran to a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier. She posted a personal-best time of 14.27 seconds, which ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season.

Heidi Nassos — Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University senior Heidi Nassos posted a personal-best mark in the pole vault for the second consecutive week at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier. Her winning vault of 3.98 meters ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jason Singer — Washington University  —  Darlington WI (Darlington)
Andrew Whitaker — Washington University  —  West Chester, OH (Lakota West)
Eddie Wintergalen — Washington University  —  Phoenix, AZ (Brophy College Preparatory)
John Harry Wagner — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

The Washington University 1,600-meter relay team of Jason Singer, Andrew Whitaker, Eddie Wintergalen, and John Harry Wagner erased nearly three seconds off their previous best program-record time to post the 15th-fastest time in NCAA Division III history at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier. Their winning time of 3:09.93 broke the program record of 3:12.37 set earlier in the month.

Dominic Oddo — Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Case Western Reserve University junior Dominic Oddo placed second in the decathlon at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier. His total of 6,487 points earned him entry into the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he will be seeded 13th. Odd won the long jump (6.89 meters) and tied for first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.28 seconds).

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
