Athletes of the Week for May 28, 2019

Softball

Sami Feller  — Emory University  —  Coral Springs, FL (Stoneman Douglas)

Junior outfielder Sami Feller earned a berth on the all-championship team after helping lead Emory University to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. She batted .353
(6-for-17) with two runs scored, a double, and one run batted in. Feller finished 3-for-4 and drove in a run as the Eagles opened championship round play with a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over Randolph-Macon College. She scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning of a 3-2 Eagles’ win over Eastern Connecticut State University.

Madison Schaefer  — Emory University  —  Newton, MA (Newton North)

Sophomore pitcher Madison Schaefer accounted for two of three Emory University wins in the Eagles’ runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. She finished 2-0 with a 1.29 earned run average, yielding three earned runs in 16.1 innings. Schaefer tossed a complete game three-hitter in the Eagles’ 2-1 win over Trine University and earned another win with five innings of relief in a 7-5 Eagles’ comeback win over Randolph-Macon College.

Women’s Tennis

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico  — Emory University  —  Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Prep)

Emory University sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico captured the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis singles championship title with a straight-set victory over her opponent from national champion Wesleyan University. She won five matches in the singles tournament, four of which were in straight sets, and finished 2-0 at No. 1 singles in two team matches.

Men’s Tennis

Jonathan Jemison  — Emory University  —  Marietta, GA (Lassiter)

Emory University senior Jonathan Jemison capped off his career by earning the clinching point in the team championship and capturing the singles title at the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship. His 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles gave the Eagles their fifth NCAA team title with a 5-3 win over top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Jemison won all five of his matches to earn the singles title, posting a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over his opponent from Carleton College in the final. 

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson  — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson won her third NCAA title and fourth of her career by winning the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. She ran the final 200 meters in 1:04.21, the fastest final lap by 2.5 seconds. Bryson, who won the race in 4:28.44, finished her season undefeated against Division III runners in the 1,500 meters to claim her first outdoor title after winning three times at the indoor championship.

Dilys Osei  — Emory University  —  Monroe, GA (George Walton Academy)

Emory University senior Dilys Osei captured the NCAA title in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Her time of 58.98 seconds marked the third-fastest time in Division III history. Osei ran on the Eagles’ third-place 400-meter relay and the eighth-place 1,600-meter relay.

Cassandra Laios  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios won the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Competing in her final collegiate event, Laios broke the program record with a winning toss of 56.34 meters. She also placed seventh in the discus with a mark of 44.41 meters.

Eka Jose  — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University sophomore Eka Jose shattered her own program record in winning the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. She won the event with a jump of 12.52 meters to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles in the event. Jose added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a program-record leap of 5.96 meters as the Bears earned a runner-up team finish.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

John Harry Wagner  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

Washington University sophomore John Harry Wagner ran on the Bears’ winning 1,600-meter relay team and broke a 32-year-old program record in earning individual All-America honors in the 400-meter run. He teamed with Jason Singer, Andrew Whitaker, and Eddie Wintergalen to break their own program record in a winning time of 3:09.77, the 14th-fastest time in Division III history. Wagner placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 46.97 to break the previous program mark of 47.03 seconds set by Marvin Williams in 1987.

Dominic Oddo  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Case Western Reserve University junior Dominic Oddo earned a 14th-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. He finished tied for third place in the long jump (6.90 meters), placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.10), and tied for ninth in the high jump (1.84 meters).

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
