Athletes of the Week for June 1, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Caleb Durbin  —  Washington University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Junior Caleb Durbin batted .400 (8-for-20) with three runs scored and five runs batted in as Washington University won the Decatur Regional to advance to the NCAA Division III Baseball World Series for the first time in program history. He drove in at least one run in four of five games and finished 2-for-4 in the championship game, a 2-0 Bears’ victory over Denison University.

Baseball - Pitcher

Jared Fong  —  Washington University  —  Austin, TX (Westlake)

In two appearances, senior Jared Fong earned his fourth win of the season and NCAA Division III leading 10th save of the year as Washington University won the Decatur Regional to advance to the NCAA Division III Baseball World Series for the first time in program history. He struck out two batters in the final inning to preserve a 2-0 Bears’ victory over Illinois College in the opening game and then tossed 7.1 innings of shutout ball, yielding four hits, in a 2-0 championship game win over Denison University.

Women’s Tennis

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico  —  Emory University  —  Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)
Katie Chang —  Emory University  —  Coto de Caza, CA (Santa Margarita Catholic)

Emory University seniors Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Katie Chang won the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship doubles title and helped lead the Eagles to the team title. The duo won all three of their matches at No. 1 doubles, including an 8-1 decision in a 5-0 win over defending champion Wesleyan University in the championship final. Gonzalez-Rico and Chang dropped just two sets in four matches to become the first Emory doubles team to win the title since 2004, defeating teammates Christina Watson and Stephanie Taylor in three sets in an all-Emory final. Gonzalez-Rico also finished 3-0 at first singles and advanced to the semifinals of the singles championship.

Men’s Tennis

Will Wanner  —  Emory University  —  Lancaster, PA (Lancaster Mennonite)

Emory University senior Will Wanner went undefeated in singles and doubles to help lead the Eagles to their second consecutive NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship title. He teamed with Andrew Esses to win all three matches at No. 2 doubles and dropped a total of nine games in six sets in three straight-set victories in singles. He posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles against Brandeis University, a 6-1, 6-1 victory at fourth singles against Johns Hopkins University, and then a 6-0, 6-4 decision against Case Western Reserve University in the Eagles’ 5-2 win.=

Jeffrey Chen  —  Brandeis University  —  Northfield, IL (New Tier)
Adam Tzeng  —  Brandeis University  —  Eagle, ID (Eagle)

Brandeis University juniors Jeffrey Chen and Adam Tzeng advanced to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship doubles final. After a 6-0, 6-2 win in the opening round, the duo came back from a one-set deficit in back-to-back matches, surviving three match points in each contest. They defeated the top-seeded team from Case Western Reserve University, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in the quarterfinals before topping their Gustavus Adolphus College opponents, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the semifinals. Chen and Tzeng fell in the final to a Carleton College tandem that included the singles national champion.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Rebekah Bondi  —  Emory University  —  Collegeville, PA (Perkiomen Valley)

Senior Rebekah Bondi of Emory University earned a pair of All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a finals time of 12.09 seconds, after setting a personal record of 11.95 seconds in the preliminaries. Bondi finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.63 meters.

Isabel Maletich  —  University of Chicago  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Junior Isabel Maletich of University of Chicago became just the fourth athlete since the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships women’s meet started in 1982 to sweep the horizontal jumps. She won the long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters and the triple jump with a mark of 12.38 meters.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jacob Ridderhoff  —  Washington University  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Washington University junior Jacob Ridderhoff recorded a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He ran a personal-best time of 3:47.47, which ranks as the third-fastest time in program history.

Bram Miller  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Bram Miller became the first Tartan to earn two All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 47.89 meters and then closed the three-day event with a runner-up finish in the shot put after a throw of 17.86 meters.


Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
