Athletes of the Week for September 12, 2016

Women’s Cross Country

Gabrielle Stravach  —  Emory University  —  Westfield, NJ (Westfield)

Emory University junior Gabrielle Stravach finished third in the 156-runner non-Division I field at the Furman University Cross Country Classic. She clocked a personal-best six-kilometer time of 22:07.38 to lead the Eagles to a second-place finish of 17 teams.

Men’s Cross Country

Jorge Maldonado  —  NYU  —  Palisades Park, NJ (Palisades Park)

NYU senior Jorge Maldonado crossed the finish line first in the 238-runner field at the Vassar College Ron Stonitsch Invitational. He completed the six-kilometer course in 19:08.01 to lead the Violets to a third-place finish in the 14-team field.

Timofey Karginov  —  University of Chicago  —  Chapel Hill, N.C. (Chapel Hill)

University of Chicago senior Timofey Karginov placed first in the 195-runner field at the Aurora University Spartan Classic. His time of 25:40.5 was 16 seconds faster than the next-fastest runner and helped the Maroons to the team title in the 17-team field.

Men’s Golf

Jack Mulligan  —  University of Rochester  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood Flossmoor)

Freshman Jack Mulligan shot a three-round total of 228 in his first appearance for University of Rochester at the St. John Fisher College Collegiate Invitational. He carded an opening round of 74 and followed with back-to-back rounds of 77. The Yellowjackets placed second in the six-team field, two strokes behind 18th-ranked St. John Fisher.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Lea McDaniel  —  Brandeis University  —  Phoenix, Ariz. (Chaparral)

Brandeis University senior forward Lea McDaniel netted five goals in a 3-0 week for the Judges. She notched her third consecutive game-winner with a goal in the 14th minute of a 1-0 Brandeis victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday. McDaniel matched the school record with four goals and eight points in a 9-0 win over Regis College. She tallied three goals in a span of 3:31, the eighth-fastest hat trick in NCAA Division III women’s soccer history.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Katie Donovan  —  University of Chicago  —  New Canaan, CT (New Canaan)

University of Chicago first-year goalkeeper Katie Donovan recorded her second and third shutouts of the season in a pair of Maroon victories. She stopped six shots in a 1-0 win over Kalamazoo College and made two saves in a 5-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University. Donovan has not allowed a goal in 326 minutes this season.

Megan Nicklay  —  Washington University  —  Lakeville, MN (Academy of Holy Angels)

Washington University senior back Megan Nicklay keyed the Bears’ defense that posted a pair of home shutout wins. The Bears allowed one shot on a goal in a 1-0 win over Aurora University on Friday and held 11th-ranked Calvin College without a shot on goal in a 3-0 Bear victory. Nicklay added an assist on the first goal against Calvin.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Dayo Adeosun  —  University of Chicago —  New York, NY (Poly Prep Country Day School)

Freshman forward Dayo Adeosun scored a pair of goals to lead ninth-ranked University of Chicago to a 4-0 win over North Park College. It marked his second multi-point game in four career contests.

Jeff Greblick  —  University of Rochester  —  LaGrangeville, NY (Arlington)

Senior forward Jeff Greblick scored the game-winning goal after assisting on the game-tying score to lead University of Rochester to a 2-1 win against Hobart College and keep the Yellowjackets unbeaten. He assisted on Jeff Rouin’s goal in the 62nd minute before breaking through the defense to tally the game-winner in the 86th minute.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Andreas Fatschel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Seven Fields, PA (Seneca Valley)

Senior back Andreas Fatschel led the Carnegie Mellon University defense that posted back-to-back shutout victories over the weekend. The Tartan defense limited Frostburg State University to three shots on goal in a 1-0 overtime win and then posted its third consecutive shutout, holding Catholic University of America to four shots on goal, in a 2-0 Tartan win.

Hill Bonin  —  University of Chicago  —  Lone Tree, CO (Rock Canyon)

Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin recorded his third and fourth shutouts of the season as University of Chicago moved to 4-0 with two victories. He stopped a penalty kick to preserve a 1-0 Maroon win at Knox College and made two saves in a 3-0 win over North Park University. Bonin has not allowed a goal this season in 369 minutes of play.

Volleyball

Emily Newton  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Manhattan Beach, CA (Chadwick School)

Carnegie Mellon University senior setter Emily Newton earned all-tournament honors and led the Tartans to a 2-1 mark against three top-10 opponents at the Juniata College Asics Invitational. She totaled 31 assists and four kills in the Tartans’ sweep of eighth-ranked Wittenberg University and contributed 33 assists and four kills in a three-set victory over ninth-ranked Christopher Newport University. Newton totaled six kills and 31 assists in a four-set loss to second-ranked Juniata, finishing the weekend averaging 9.5 assists per set with 14 kills and 24 digs.

Haley Sims  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Moon Township, PA (Moon Area)

Case Western Reserve University first-year middle hitter Haley Sims earned all-tournament honors in leading the Spartans to the title at the 18th Annual Marcia French Invitational co-hosted by CWRU and Baldwin Wallace University. In five Spartan wins for the week, four of which went five sets, Sims hit .480, averaging 2.42 kills per set, adding 19 blocks and 15 digs. Sims hit .500 with 14 kills as the Spartans came back from a 2-0 deficit to hand Berry College its first loss of the season on Friday night.

Women’s Tennis

Bridget Harding  —  Emory University  —  Northport, NY (Northport)

Emory University junior Bridget Harding won the top flight at the Elon University Fall Invitational, finishing 4-0 against NCAA Division I opponents. She advanced to the finals with three consecutive two-set victories before taking the final against her Elon opponent, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Harding and senior Katarina Su placed third in doubles in the top flight, winning two of three matches.

Men’s Tennis

Kenny Zheng  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pennington, NJ (Hopewell Valley Central)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Kenny Zheng posted a 2-0 record in singles and doubles as the Tartans faced NCAA Division I Duquesne University. He earned 8-3 and 9-7 wins in singles, and teamed with sophomore Vayum Arora for a 6-4 doubles triumph over the Dukes’ top pair and freshman Michael Rozenvasser for a 6-2 victory.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
